"On Sunday, Tasmania Police told of the efforts to rescue Ms Walker, which involved risking the lives of emergency crews in hazardous conditions at the crash site, 100 metres below the summit at West Portal, near Federation Peak and the Western Arthur Range."
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

A long break between Helicopter Rescues
As per matagi below
From Tasmanian Police Facebook
A 29 year old Sydney woman had slipped and fallen three metres to the base of Ferguson’s Falls on the 20th April.
She was winched from the area with serious non life threatening injuries.
She was part of a guided walking group.

A 45 year old Devonport female was rescued when she fell approximately 8 metres landing in the pool at the base of Parsons Falls near Lake Mackenzie yesterday.
An off duty remote area nurse and other members of the public provided first aid.
Both Rescue Helicopters were used in the Rescue as a retrieval doctor was required. She was flown to Hobart with facial and other injuries

You missed the one on April 20th at Fergusson Falls.
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

From the Examiner
A Westpac rescue helicopter was used to winch a Launceston man to safety after he became disoriented on a walk in the South West National Park the night of June 27.

The 20-year-old was located uninjured but disoriented on the northwestern side of Mount Eliza on the Mount Anne Track.
He was flown to Hobart after alerting authorities by setting of his PLB.

Interesting.... I wonder if he'll get in any kind of trouble for being in an area that's meant to be closed to walkers??

He probably figured he'd get away with it at this time of year - and then it sounds like he got lost on the descent.
I find myself totally lacking in any sympathy for him.

Yes I agree NNW. If ever there's been an argument for people paying for their rescues this would be it.

My reading of the Parks notice is that the Mt Anne track is closed until it is cleared for use or the track infrastructure is repaired. That would mean you can still access the area as long as you keep away from the fire damaged tracks.

There isn't really another way to Mt Eliza except using the fire affected tracks/area.

PWS website also clearly asks people to avoid all fire affected areas while they are closed so I don't think your argument is valid tentpeg.

From the Advocate

https://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/62 ... -tas/?cs=7

In addition to the search for Mr Bowman, Tasmania Police conducted another two search and rescue operations in Northern Tasmania overnight, one in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and another in Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park.

The freezing weather has caught several hikers off guard, including a Brisbane man aged in his mid-40s who was rescued by helicopter on Monday afternoon after getting into trouble at Lake Petrarch near Lake St Clair.

Earlier in the day, two NSW hikers were plucked from the Walls of Jerusalem National Park to the south.

The pair put out an emergency call on Sunday after finding the conditions too difficult to continue walking.

In a separate search mission, bad conditions prevented crews from reaching a Western Australian father and daughter in Lake St Clair National Park.

The pair on Sunday afternoon told family they were having trouble in blizzard-like conditions.

Police say they are experienced hikers with suitable equipment and are making their way to Pelion Hut, from where authorities will decide if they need help.

About 30 walkers are in Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park, including a school group of about 10 from Hobart.

Search crews are hoping to use a helicopter to reach and check huts along trails on Tuesday.

Authorities have urged people not to go bushwalking unless they are fully prepared for freezing weather.

I'm surprised so many people went out walking late last week in conditions that they are not able to deal with. I had a walk planned for the weekend but cancelled due to the weather forecast.

The weather forecast for Launceston was quite good, but the forecast for the central plateau and highlands was terrible, and clearly unsuitable for bushwalking (for the vast majority of people).

More and more people are doing the OT in winter, partly to escape the fees and rigidity of the booking system. Unfortunately, too many of them aren't appropriately equipped, and can't judge the conditions properly.
Apart from everything else, I'm concerned this might be used as a justification for further reduction - or even elimination - of the off-season period.

I'm going in a couple of weeks. Not to avoid the booking system but to experience it in winter.

Many, many ski touring trips under my belt so well prepared and looking forward to it.

Also, going with a mate who is well experienced in bad snow/winter conditions.

Still, if it craps out as badly as now we will go drink some wine instead....

I want to know more about this one. He needs to have a good excuse for not triggering the PLB, in my opinion. He must have known there'd be a search.
