Franklin River level at Lk Dixon?

Postby Tortoise » Thu 15 Dec, 2016 10:14 am

Long shot, but has anyone been there very recently? Hoping to cross it tomorrow, but suspecting we need a good plan b.
Thanks

I haven't been in there recently, but judging by the rainfall charts, I think you will be ok. Only 80mm so far this month. There are a few spots that you can cross, just keep walking upstream until you find a calm spot.

I don't think you'll have a problem.

I don't remember having any issue getting across both near Lk Dixon or Hermione, wasn't a particular wide or deep river from memory.

Probably far enough towards the source that you not having this massive catchment funnelled the water in the Franklin, like the Gordon River around the Vale of Rasselas.
So you wouldn't expect it to be massively up or stay up for ages... but.....

As pazzar says you can walk around and find a spot and I wouldn't expect it to be too difficult.

Franklin River upstream from its confluence with the Collingwood River is really just a creek and not a river at all (although it can still get significant water in it after rain, like any SW creek).

In reality, the Franklin is really the tributary of the Collingwood, not the other way around. But nomenclature happens. I guess because Mr & Mrs Franklin were hoity-toity and Collingwood is just a bunch of deluded football fanatics so the name 'Franklin River' won out even though it was really just a creek and the river that it joined further down was a different river altogether.

I confess I hadn't even had a good look at the catchment area, as I'm in scrambled-brain-tag-a-long mode. (Slap.)
I'd heard it's often impassable in winter, sometimes long into spring, and of course we did have a very soggy winter indeed. The creek might be a bit deeper on the way out, unless the snow on Saturday stays settled until after we've crossed back. :)

Hi I drove over Franklin yesterday afternoon. Water levels were moderately low, should be fine to cross, I reckon you might be able to rock hop just above Dixon without issues
