Fuel reduction burns SW Tasmania

Postby tastrax » Wed 19 Apr, 2017 9:12 pm

Planned burns for Southwest National Park.

PWS is advising people travelling into the remote Southwest National Park over the next several weeks to be aware that a number of large scale fuel reduction burns will be undertaken as weather permits.

The burns will be ignited from the air via helicopter, anytime from 22 April until the end of June 2017, as weather and fuel conditions permit.

During burning operations public access in the areas of Scotts Peak Road, Low Rocky Point, Elliot Bay, Nye Bay, Giblin River, Mulcahy Bay and Wreck Bay may be restricted.

The Mt Anne Track and Lake Judd Track will be closed at short notice to allow fuel reduction burns to take place as weather conditions permit.

The burns are aimed specifically at reducing the bushfire risk to fire sensitive values within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, specifically rainforest, alpine vegetation communities and organic soils, and reducing the risk of large scale landscape fires.

People intending to travel to these areas are advised to keep up to date with when the burns will proceed by checking the PWS planned burns information at http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/plannedburns or by calling 6165 4056.
