Huon Pine tree near Rosebery

Postby Laureen67 » Mon 01 Jan, 2018 11:00 am

I’m wanting to see the very old Huon Pine tree stand that is on Mt Read near Lake Johnston, has anyone been there lately, or knows how to gain access to it, I would be very interested to hear from you.

Not much recent information and sounds like access restricted. Tour operator, Hay tours, has no website!!!

Try the parks office at Queenstown. I am not sure if the tours actually run. PWS.Westcoast@parks.tas.gov.au

Hi I may be able to help.

The road up Mt read is locked but is used by mmg Rosebery (the mine), Telecoms and enviros. You can get a key to the gate from site administration at Rosebery mine (SEAC sign) which is at the end of hospital road.

Where the tree is up there is not marked, at the top of the mountain there is a branch in the road going right with another different lock on it, this goes to old legacy mining areas. Go past this and another, less distinct path branches off to the right shortly before all the Telecom towers. This I believe is the way to the trees, though pottering around the top of mountain region in general there is much diverse plant life. I have never taken a 2wd up the mountain all the way, it could probably be done however it is steep and likely slippery. Road is maintained in good condition however. It is a renowned bike ride, especially coming down!

Thank you very much for your information, I’m really hoping to find the stand of trees, one of the oldest if not oldest in the world, there used to be a tour operator who took people there but he hasn’t been doing it for last couple of years, I love Huon Pine and it’s history, it would mean a lot to me to see it.

The huon pines are around lake Johnston, This can be accessed as I mentioned before on the second right turn from main road at top of mountain plateau. See the administration at Rosebery Mine for key/ to let them know you are up there and you shouldn't have any issues with access. Cheers

It sounds like the strand is not far off the track by Lake Johnston.

Type in Lake Johnston, Rosebery, Tasmania into google earth and then look NW of the lake and you will see the boardwalk.

There is NO general public access to the Lake Johnston Nature Reserve.

http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/file.aspx?id=6597

It is vitally important that access is restricted.

That is correct but there are provisions to allow access. I will provide those details to Laureen67

Page 21 of the management plan lists those conditions.
