Mt Mueller

Postby Ridge » Mon 10 Dec, 2007 11:13 pm

Had an attempt at climbing up Mt Mueller on a hot day a couple of months ago with a friend who was visiting Tasmania from France. After some difficulty, we found the start of the track and made our way to Fossil Lake. From here, it seemed that the only route up Mt Mueller was a horrible scrub bash through scoparia down into a valley and then back up again. We were both wearing T-shirts and shorts and were not overly keen to get cut to ribbons, so we tried a few different routes but eventually decided to give it a miss.

I am very keen to have another go (this time wearing more protective clothing). Does anyone know the best way to get from the lake to the top of Mt Mueller? If you have done this walk, how long did it take you to get from the lake to the top? Would be interested in any comments. Any detailed notes would be welcome via PM.

From the low ground on the north side of the lake, a faint pad, marked with tape does go up to the first summit of Mt Mueller. It's not scrubby at all and probably only takes 30-40 minutes to get to the first summit. For those wishing to continue on to the slightly higher true summit, an extra hour or so can be spent picking your way along a slightly rocky ridgeline.

I was last there only a couple of months ago and the lake level was quite low making the start of the route a little tricky to find. Avoid the side of the lake with the ridge and the odd Pandani. Go for the non-attractive side with the dead vegetation.
