Have your say on Tassie’s next iconic multi-day walk

I just saw this on the Park's website. https://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=49517

It looks like they are looking for ideas for the next great multi-day walk. I presume they will connect the third cape into the Three Capes Track before starting a new multi-day walk. I guess they just need to go through the ideas phase first so they have something ready to go by the time that track is completed.

Submissions will close at 11pm on 24 November 2018 (Australian Eastern Standard Time).

So who's got some ideas?

It may not necessarily meet the silly weather criteria???, but establishing a Trans Tarkine multiday walk along the lines of that already proposed by the Bob Brown Foundation would seem worthy. Weather would be largely irrelevant given much of it is in forest and not at altitude.

And the most seamless replacement for both the Tourism & Parks Directors (must be a great time to be a park ranger) :

In the criteria to meet section it states that it must be...

" no longer than 4 days and three nights. "

That rules out the South Coast Track and the Trans Tarkine Track. Although I have suspected Johnstone wants to fly people into Little Deadmans and walk out from there...a coastal version of the TTT could work but ideally that would be 5 days 4 nights...

Other than that, I think it would be a fantastic walk.

Yes, fantastic, barren wasteland it is. One more for the ministry:

An island walk would be great, never been to Flinders Island but that would be a nice one. Off the top of my head I thought Walls of Jerusalem, but I prefer having it wild next to the overused Overland track. I think the obvious choice is the Tarkine. This region needs to be known so it can be better protected. They shouldn't overdo it though, IE not do what they did with the Three Capes... But they could improve the roads, create a real Tarkine national park, and provide us with a circuit showcasing what the region has to offer, mainly one of the last intact (mostly) temperate rainforests on Earth.

There's already a Flinders Island development:

..

Really.. how about letting us Tasmanians settle in to the mass change already given the brown thumb and not yet realised.
Sure, we can have these 3 Capes style Wilderness Tollways behind every hill, within a term of government.. but given the lack of an urban mindset such progress will be easier as ideals die off.

Lot's could be done with a Tarkine NP, maybe a long walking track is a good idea, as opposed to a cute one.. but shameful joining in this process, with these people.

Looking back at policy/ prospectus might help narrow down what this government has in mind:

Even though these places already all have approved (additional?) proposals ready, set to go (aside from Tarkine).

I'd assume they don't really mean a boat trip from Strahan to Bathurst hbr.
I'd assume the revenue/usage figures are enhanced, use of the term 'additional', in this case, can only be speculative.

Maybe our park service can provide more insight on this (even if they are forced to consider no opinion other than how to get a proposal underway..) as part of their commitment to public consultation.

For instance, has a short-er list of options already been decided? Has there been consultation already with a commercial partner (ie. 'huts', what does this mean, public huts or commercial huts, huts with heating or heated spa? both?

Far South Future group out of Dover are proposing a walk from Ida Bay(train to Southport Lagoon) and around the coast to SE Cape. It's unwieldy as a walk proposal but doesn't create too many impacts on fragile landscapes, would have hop on/off options and be an all year weather option. Govt will dismiss it out of hand after that group kicked their *&%$#! out of Dover re woodchip export facility!

I imagine many good (if misguided) submissions but doubt the result will be too imaginative.
hmm, maybe the options will be on sportsbet

A crazy idea...but they could just spend it on essential infrastructure on already built stuff, where it's needed... #for *&^%$# sake

Not gonna happen. That would be seen as maintenance/improvement of existing stuff. And there is already a budget/allocation for that.

What they want is something new. Something they can put their name on, something for the election. I think that getting people away from the crowed existing stuff is a good idea. Unfortunately it will not work as the numbers of people will increase year by year, so any reduction caused by a new walk will soon vanish as numbers increase. It is like building a new highway ...great when it first gets put in .. then it too gets crowded. If it were not built then the over crowding of the existing stuff will deter people from coming, and that is gonna happen anyway.
Pessimist? Where pollies are concerned .. yes.

The Romans had no zero, we do. A budget of $0 is still a budget

Parks will have a budget, they may get to decide how it is divided up, some for maintenance etc. Or that decision my be out of their hands. If some event like a mud slide takes place then the budget may all be used up on that leaving nothing for what was planned/desired.

Someone on Bruny has been sharing (on Facebook) his idea of a N-S Bruny island walk including Cape Queen Elizabeth and The Slide Track, suggesting a 3-4 day walk. I don't dislike this idea compared to some of the others that I've seen proposed.

Sadly Exclusivity = $. There's still many spectacular parts of the WHA that can be accessed in 4 days.

A win in the short term. Yet some of the most popular / historically successful worldwide trails seem to rely on basic camp or shelter facilities in parks and link road crossings/ access service points, 'park villages'/accommodation, nearby towns. Boost regional economy. Lot's of options other than cutting swaths through wilderness and installing mini-villages.

This sounds idyllic. I'd imagine the public revenue would barely fund the ongoing maintenance? And, while it's good to see people having fun, it seems more for an interaction between walkers as walkers and their environs, does the support stop if other places aren't similarly developed?:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinat ... -not-cheap

As good as it may sound, transferring this, a mysterious 'lodge' and an inevitable string of private huts to eg... Walls of Jerusalem could only be a disaster, no matter how well hidden (has always felt a bit 'intrusive' just taking occasional camping groups there..)

I would have though something in the vicinity of Kelly Basin would be the standout option. With access both by land or water and a heap of colonial history it's a really interesting place with very a different environment to the other major multi-day walks in the state. It would also tie in perfectly with existing tourism ventures in the region - both cruises on the Gordon River and the West Coast Wilderness Railway.

It's more appropriate for a hut based walk, certainly.
While I love the idea of the Trans Tarkine Track (and the route is mostly pretty good), it's longer than the ptb want and I really don't want that place *&%$#! with huts, gluts and lodges all over. Ditto Walls and CP. They're talking about a "different area" to the (Two Out of) Three Capes and Overland, which means north east (Ben Lomond?) and west (Tarkine?) should be the prioritised zones.

Meh, can't believe I'm talking like this is a foregone conclusion. Get your effing greedy mitts off our WHA!!!!!! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

They need to also extend the terms. If the park service is now charged with hacking through our parks, possibly WHA, for no outstanding purpose other than

~providing access for the developments of commercial operators~

..then 'we' want to know what happened to the conservation element of their charge, what sort of contortions need to be made to relate this process to due care for our parks (and WHA). Do we need yet another level of reserve with yet another new service provider? A conservation dept. for places kept primarily for their own good/ the pinnacle of achievement in a civilised society, all that. No confidence in this emerging arrangement.

Submissions invited as to a) whether our park service takes part in this process (ie. unrestrained by the need for political gloss)?
(preferably- here's the info you'll need to make a decision; here are the facts/ economics/ constraints/ opinions of conservationists within the department etc.)

A bit of insight into, what at the end of the day what is essentially, lip service to 'advisory' boards, management boards, input by 'friends of' groups.. consequences of dismissing either expert or enthusiast public input/opinion?

How hard would it be to connect up tracks between the Overland and Port Davey tracks so there's a semi-official north-south traverse from Penguin to Cockle Creek?
