Cockle Creek - Hobart transportation advice?

Postby JingJing » Tue 13 Nov, 2018 6:06 am

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for advice about transportation from Cockle Creek to Hobart.
Two my friends and I are going to walk South Coast track in January. We expect to finish on 8th Jan and we will need some public transport to return to Hobart.
I see several options:
1. Arrange transfer with Tasmanian Wilderness Experience. It's convinient, but very expensive...
2. Take a taxy to Dover or Geevstone, then take a bus.
3. Don't book anything in advance and hope that someone will give us a lift when we arrive at Cockle Creek.

What would you recommend?

- How high is the chance to get a lift for 3 people?
- How far in advance I should book a taxi?

I'd love to hear any advice. Thanks!

A single person can cop a ride pretty easily. Three together would be harder.

A few years ago, four of us with packs got a taxi to Cockle Creek and return (we did the Moonlight Track circuit) for the same price as the bus and at the times that it suite us and it was excellent. The worst thing about bus prices at that time was that while the price/person was less with more passengers that only applied till there were say 4-6 of you and after that, the price was the same no matter the number of passengers. With the taxi though, you do need four to make it economical but perhaps I would pay in a party of three.

It depends on your finances and time.

I've taken a taxi from Hobart to Cockle Creek twice. Once I was alone. As I recall the fare was about $230. That's kind of expensive but my time was worth more to me on those trips. Hitchhiking from Hobart to Cockle might be difficult, I'm not sure as I didn't try. Taking a bus to Geeveston first didn't work out to be worth it either in my estimation. If I were going the direction you are and had a day to kill I would hitchhike back, at least if I were alone. Traveling in a party of three I'd probably opt to arrange a taxi.

I'm looking it from the perspective of an occasional visitor from overseas. By the time I get to Hobart I've already invested a bunch of money and my time is generally limited.

But if I lived in Hobart there's no way I'd take a taxi!
