WoJ, Never Never, Lake St Clair ... any recent intel?

Postby jnik » Thu 15 Nov, 2018 11:14 am

Hi all,

Our next Tassie walk is fast approaching (early Dec), and we'd appreciate any recent intel on track conditions etc.

Starting from the Walls car park, the planned route is:
Wild Dog or Dixon's (aiming for Dixon's but as we're coming from Melbourne it'll be a late start)
Dixon's (after spending a day exploring the area)
South end of Lake Adelaide or Mestons Hut (via Lake Ball)
Hartnett Falls (via the Never Never)
    Pine Valley
    Pine Valley
    Cuvier Valley

I appreciate it's not exactly uncharted territory, and we've perused many trip reports, but haven't come across anything recent.

TIA,
Julian.

Went through there in April. Hope you can get some useful info from my trip.

Bogholesandbuckethats,

Thanks for directing me to your trip report ... very informative, and I particularly liked your sunrise shot.

Hopefully it won't be as wet for us as it was for you.

And, hmmm, possums at Dixon's Kingdom. While I've been fortunate to have never had animal problems, even at known problem sites, I understand Dixon's Kingdom is in a league of it's own.

We were contemplating stringing up our food bags as you did ... you say you woke up to find the big guy had climbed down onto your food bag ... did he get in? Would you now recommend a different approach?

Thanks,
Julian.

A good approach is to have some curtain nylon line and string it horizontally between 2 trees and hang the food in a dry bag in the middle. You then thread 2 plastic bottles on either side of the food bag on the curtain line. If critters try to climb along the line they hit the bottles and these will spin and dump the possum / critter to the ground! Seems to work and another member of this forum has used it a fair bit!

We have stayed at Dixon's a few times and have not had issues with food placed at the bottom of packs in a Loksak Opsak bag (odour proof).

Also make sure you store your toothpaste and anything else with a strong smell in the bags or up the tree on the line!
