Any tent/camp sites near Mt Oakleigh as I want to either be viewing it at sunrise or be on it at sunrise.I know the obvious sites are New Pelion Hut or the junction of Arm River Track was just wondering if there is anything up the Mt Oakleigh Track?

What do you mean by viewing it? You can see Mt Oakleigh quite clearly from New Pelion Hut.

You can see it either at or not far from Frog Flats.

You didn't say that in your original post - your question was about viewing Mt Oakleigh and really, the best place to view Mt Oakleigh is from New Pelion Hut.

As far as camping on Arm River Track - You cannot camp in the area between New Pelion Hut and Douglas Creek. If you want to camp, you need to camp east of Douglas Creek. The water coming out of Douglas Creek is considered not safe for drinking. You can get potable water from the outlet of Lake Ayr and Lake Ayr is also a good camping spot, but I'm not sure you'd get a good view of Mt Oakleigh from there.

This is a terrible photo I took as we walked past, but there are some grassy areas like this just as the steeper part of the climb begins on the way up Mt Oakleigh. You wouldn't have any views of Oakleigh, but you would be closer to try and make it to the summit for sunrise.

Sunset from the Hydro Hut is not bad - sunrise is a bit shadowy
But that is a fair way from the climb... :)

Chapman says nothing - beyond daywalk up & down, but you're at the southern end of the February Plains, with huts 1-3 thereon so it shouldn't be hard to suss out a location on high if you've time to hand.
A place I hope to visit and walk out the north of. Simon Cubit country.

I've walked up the Mt Oakleigh track to the top of the escarpment, then turned right to Wurragarra Creek, instead of turning left to Mt Oakleigh high point. This is off track, but there are campsites along the way - you would be close and on high.

Look on LIST, use ESRI Imagery in basemaps, and you will see the terrain/vegetation. Topographic will show you the contours.

Paul.

I've not been on Oakleigh...but if the weather is fine, why not camp on top? Looking at Listmap it's pretty flat up there with some grassy areas to squeeze a tent or bivi. Appears to be water up there too.
Wouldn't be the best idea if the weather is questionable though...

Flat spots for a tent? A bit of looking should find something usable almost anywhere. A 'dispersed camping' adventure rather than concentrated by pics and advice.

Thanks for the info,I think I’ll scout around for a spot up the Oakleigh Track so I can get to the summit before daylight.
