2 nights and 30km

Postby Macca81 » Fri 28 May, 2010 10:47 pm

Hey all,

one of my scouts needs to organise a hike of 2 nights and at least 30km for her green cord, she is struggling to come up with anything but overnighters and im not doing much better.

so, does anyone have any ideas on a 2 night hike that covers 30-35kms and is suitable for 12-14 year old kids? all my ideas in my head cover that sort of distance for an overnighter and i already know that my kids cant keep that pace...

Cheers

How about starting at Lake St Clair, walk around the lake to Narcissus. That's 13k for day 1. Day two could be a day hike to Pine Valley and the Labyrinth or Lake Marion and return to Narcissus. Then out via the lake track for day 3. The good think about the lake track is that it's pretty flat and the forest can give some shelter.

The Wall's of Jerusalem could be an option. Its about 10k to Wild Dog Creek camping area. Day 2 head through the walls to Dixon's Kingdom, down to Lake Ball, then west to Lake Adelaide, camping at the end. Walk out the next day. The initial climb might be a bit tough, but after than it should be OK.

Hi Macca,

I can't help with the local knowledge, but I can with the age group.

Assume that the 12 y.o. will do 2.5km per hour on easy ground, and less on difficult tracks. Amazing how slow they go, sometimes.

6 hours per day on average moving = 15km times three days -> 40-45km tracks, an average two day walk for the usual person.

Think about it this way, and try and recall a walk with plenty of campsites - one may pop up as being useable.

Cheers,

eddie.

i had thought about the south coast track, and i like the idea.
had not thought of Narcissus tho, but ill certainly be giving her the idea ;)
walls would be nice, but im skeptical as to whether more than about 2 of my scouts could tackle that climb... ill see who is actually interested in going :P

South Cape Rivulet would be a good option.
We did that quite a few times when I was in scouts many years ago.

Not sure that it would be 30km return.. more like 20 something..

I'm struggling to think of anything 30km or so that wouldn't be pushing it a bit too far.

can you work out some kind of combination of tracks on Mt Field? It sounded to me like you wanted to hike 30k from a central place- basically three day walks.

not day walks, i want them to have to walk to there camp site. a circuit would be ideal, but clearly is not the only option.

the problem im finding is that camp sites are usually about 15km apart, which i think is pushing it for most of these kids, 10-12km would work fine i think, its just finding somewhere like that is harder than i expected...

30km in 2 days or 45km in 3 days is easy, only having 30km in 3 days seems to be leaving me with only walks that inexpirienced kids just would not be able to do... i think....

Mt Field might be the go, start/finish Lake Dobson
Night 1 - K-Col with side trip to Field West
Night 2 Twilight Tarn via Newdegate Pass
Campsites couldn't handle large groups though.......

BTW Sth Cape Rivulet would be good but is only about 23km return

i thought about running a day trip out to granite beach from SCR, but thats near enough to 20km return... having not done it for some time and the memory is fading, what is the view like from the south cape range? thats close enough to a 10km day trip... i think...

what about doing some sort of circuit involving Lee's paddocks. A flat trail in and out. How about Lee's paddocks- set up base camp, then up to Pelion and surrounding area on Day two, going back to Lee's paddocks that night, and then out again on Day three.

Day 1 is 9km, Day 2 would have to be 12 km, but without heavy packs, Day 3 would be 9 km.

OR- what about doing a figure 8 walk at Cradle Mtn- Day 1 Visitor's Centre to Scout Hut (about 9 k's, with only the end being moderate in difficulty, and most over boardwalk), spend the night at the Scout Hut, then Day 2 up onto the Plateau via Marions and do a circuit up there, coming back to the Scout Hut for night 2, and the Day 3 back down to the Visitor's centre.

Hey- that sounds like fun!!!!

OR.....Would Freycinet do it? Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay for night one- that's a pretty steep track though, and then Wineglass Bay to Hazard's Bay for night two, and then ending back at Coles Bay. Would that be long enough?

According to Tas Parks the Freycinet Circuit is 30km.

G'day Macca81,
My Scouts did the Cradle walk to the " old" Waterfall Valley Hut then next day on to Lake Wilks and back to WFV overnight and out that well and truly covered the 30 km however I seem to remember that Scouts are not allowed above the tree line now so the Lake St Clair walk should be acceptable , Visitors centre to Narcissus and back a tad over 30km from memory , breaking it up to suit there are a few good camping spots along the way and all sheltered.

Thinking back to my scout days I remember the 30km and the different levels depending on which cord you were going for.

We thought back then that it was potentially getting a bit too ambitious from the Tassie point of view and that it was a challenge better suited for the mainland scouts.
Particularly with all the rules and regulations here about where you can go.

Interesting comment aljscott,

Looking at the dates it was 1994 when my Scouts did their 30 km walk and as a result earned their Green Cords .I did mine in around 1960 ,then we were totally unassisted no adults near us and for some reason expected to be literate with log book and able to "survive" well we did because we did not know any better.

cape pillar is about 30km... not sure if you could add in a campsite into that route... was a bit muddy last time i was there...
Tasman arch - fortesque bay is 34km normally 2 day so same deal - look at adding a camp in...it's usually 2 17 km days "easy grade" 6hrs walking for adults, tasmap 1:25k Taranna & Hippolyte... been a while since i was there tho - i think that there was a campsite at bivouac bay.
cheers Liam.
