Travel clothing ? New York in Spring ?

Postby Moondog55 » Mon 25 Apr, 2016 1:56 pm

The travel guides are useless for me.
I'm just wondering what would be the most suitable for my needs and trying to decide between insulation layers
Uniqlo down parka/ Mont-Bell Thermawrap or old Army woolypully that I can leave behind without regret if I manage to find the money to do any Patagonia shopping
Obviously I'll take one set of longjohns and a very LW dress jumper but I'm only going for 3 weeks and want to keep it to the absolute minimum
I am taking the LW Drizabone raincoat and a smart hood-less "Mountain jacket"
One of the travel advisory sites said that the Metro rail tunnels can be very cold and we will be using the train a lot
Ceciles says to dress as if we are staying in Melbourne but I don't want to take that many clothes
Gloves, scarf and "Silly" hat also
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

Temps in spring are about mid teens at night and mid 20's during the day with the possibility of the odd cold night and day still around. The closer you move towards July the more stable and closer to the above temps. That's centigrade by the way :)

Next week, and then for the next 3 weeks; current temps are what I would consider winter weather around here due to the humidity.
Travel advice was to not dress like a tourist because tourists get ripped off something shocking but it seems New Yorkers have a weird fashion sense and do not dress like us from the Fashion Capital of Australia
I am not slashing up a good pair of combat pants or jeans just so I can look "Fashionable" either
Binghamton I don't care, we are with family there and they dress weird anyway
I just found one of my old Katmandu ski jumpers and that may do, reversible black and purple and windproof lined

All warming up from now and in the teens. Easy to dress. For a big international city like that, you won't be spotted as a tourist on your dress sense but your behaviour. You'll only get ripped off if you let them do so by going to those tourist spots. Not hard to avoid.

Worst case scenario if you find you are short on clothing, drop into a nearby Marshalls or TJ Maxx and there'll be plenty of discount clothing to supplement your needs. As suggested earlier, dress however you want but it's your behaviour that'll most likely to give away your origin. But if you are situationally aware, keeping your distance with certain individuals and avoid the pitfalls (dangerous neighbourhood, tourist traps, scams), you'll be fine to enjoy a wonderful stay. More importantly for one's safety, look to the left when crossing a road or street, or as a routine, always check both sides.

Bring a thick jacket too and you'll be fine to go out late at night too.

That's the problem at the moment
Trying to sell the really thick Everest parka [ really too small] and all of the other available ones are UL stuff like the Uniqlo. OK big jumper goes back in

for 5-15C range, a layer or two under a Uniqlo down shirt would cover it. Add a shell and it's all fine. Or just a thick jacket. As said, wardrobe update opportunity from Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Century 21 there in NYC.

Quite interesting this packing for travel with new LW and UL clothing
All up my bag only weighs 11 kilos with enough to last me a month and I've thrown in my army jumper at the last minute
23 kilos goes a long way when there are no mountaineering boots and gear included
So I have room for lots of Cherry Ripes for the family
