Q: Sources for Topographic GPS Maps for NZ

Wed 08 Feb, 2017 9:04 pm

Hi all,

I'm heading off to do some hiking in NZ for a few weeks shortly and am looking for some maps to put on my Garmin Etrex 30. I'll be heading to the South Is.

In Aus I mostly use Contours Australia, Shonky Maps, Open Street Maps.

Can anyone recommend any (free would be best!) gps maps for NZ?

Thanks TasTrax for your post.

I had found those links and was a bit worried NZ OPEN GPS PROJECT's pages are from circa 2009 and the forum appear irregularly used.

I'll check them out over the weekend.

Hi enduro

I can thoroughly recommend this one (the first listed on the NZ Open GPS Project page suggested by tastrax):

Mr Purple's topo maps

Includes MapSource Installer

Appears the links download files are broken for http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1810 (tried a few times)

Trying Nev's rebiuld " Free Open GPS NZ Topo 12.2 - LINZ Topo50 with roads - 617MB" just now.

Works OK for me.

Click Download for PC - it will take you here http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=32317#p32317

Then you need to click on each download file. Not right-click Save link as.

first link works well, the second doesn't seem to complete download ... then maybe it's not supposed to be the same file type as it's part of a zip catalogue or slip up zip file.

Second one downloads OK for me (albeit a bit slow).

I have got MrPurple's/NEV's Free Open GPS NZ Topo 12.2 - Topo50.img compiled maps on my Garmins as well.

But if anyone is interested, if you have an android phone and Oruxmaps/Locus, you can use these great LINZ maps fully offline https://sites.google.com/site/irnzmaps/

They include the LINZ Jan 2016 1:50k, 1:250K maps. I used them in NZ last Jan and they were great.

I am not sure if there are any iOS apps that can view mbtile format maps offline.

Hi all.

I've successfully downloaded the maps and installed them.

Looking at them on Basecamp they look tremendously detailed. They even have tramping tracks on them.

You have probably worked all this out, enduro, but for others reading this thread....

Yes, the download is detailed - it is the complete set of 1:50,000 maps of NZ. LINZ is Land Information New Zealand (ie the government's land management statutory body). LINZ have made all this mapping data available for no charge - free ! Wouldn't it be great is each state in Australia did the same?

They haven't been updated since Oct 2013 (a major system crash, I believe) but this will only result in minor differences with the current LINZ maps (geographical features don't tend to move a lot - although NZ does have the occasional earthquake). If you want to compare current with the download, go to http://www.topomap.co.nz

They have DOC tramping tracks (mostly) but additional track data can be found at http://www.routeguides.co.nz and http://www.tramper.nz
