Gaumukh & Tapovan , N. India. Any good trekking firms?

Postby paidal_chalne_vala » Tue 02 Jan, 2018 6:45 pm

Hi
I am off to trek to the source of the Ganges River this year , in late September. I am looking for a trekking company based in Rishikesh or Haridwar that can put together a customized trek with a guide and 2-3 porters for me . I plan to start from Gangotri having spent a few days there at 3142 M. acclimatizing for the 4500 M. + conditions at Tapovan.
Can anyone recommend a trekking firm that is locally based in Uttarakhand province in N. India ?
:-)

I can't answer your direct question, but back in 1995 or so me and my wife walked up to Gaumukh, and then on Tapovan, and we just made the arrangements ourselves. It is easy to get buses from Delhi to Gangotri; from Gangotri, the walk to Tapovan will then take you two days. We just carried everything we needed.

Many Indians do the trip to Gaumukh as a pilgrimage of course; it's a well-trodden path.

I realize none of this answers the question you asked; however, post back if you'd like any more details of what we did.

The Glacier crossing/climb is where the guide/porters would be handy. I don't want to spend too much but permits, camping fees etc. are all making this route less free and easy. I have been all over India 6 times so I know the ropes there and I usually just go from A to B as an independent traveller.

Hi PCV
Just do it yourself,
buy food and get the bus from Uttarkashi,
its a long trip
then organise some porters in Gangotri if you need them and head off.
Take your time with the altitude.
