It looks like the trig on the last hill as you drop down Quartz ridge track off the south side of Bogong towards Big River and the Grey Hills. God knows if its got a name though. It doesn't on my maps.

Well done, wobbly, you win.

It's a no-name so far as I know. The trig point is off the track in the trees and not obvious from the track. On my first walk on the spur I didn't see it at all but spotted it this time.

By the way, for anyone planning to walk on Quartz, a crew of five from Parks Vic Mount Beauty cleared fallen trees and did brushcutting on February 15 (noted in intentions book). Also, one of them did an asbestos survey at Cairn Creek hut and installed route markers (orange tape) on the walking track to it on February 9.

Thurra River dunes
Thanks Peregrinator. Yes I only noticed the trig myself after we'd stopped there for a break. Great news about the track clearing- the fallen trees seemed almost endless below this point at back in december when we went through.
Next pic is also from Vic

Is it the large dune west of the Thurra River, east of Point Hicks?

And back to markers at high places. Where in Victoria is this one located?

Sorry, Lophophaps, I don't know what WAG means, but this is not at or near Mt Arapiles.

Location is a massive 66 metres above sea level. Much further east from the Wimmera.

It is not the highest point in these parts though. That accolade goes to a towering 98m peak about five kilometres away.

WAG #2. Near or at Point Hicks? If not, between Araps amd Point Hicks on a 300 kilometre N-S front. This covers 85% of Victoria so I increase my chances.

It is certainly between the two nominated locations. Very much so.

I.e., it is roughly half-way. But veer a bit away from a straight line, because it is near the coast.

My Point Hicks WAG was made with the coast in mind. Near Barry Beach or Lower Tarwin?

Barry Beach is getting closer. Tarwin Lower is closer still.

Tip of the peninsula opposite Inverloch? One of the coastal bumps near Cape Patterson?

Closer, yet more closer. Speaking of tips: it is in a National Park.

Bunurong Marine National Park? I have no idea which of the headlands it may be. It's probably south of Wodonga.

And it is certainly north of Mt Ossa.

I mentioned national parks because apart from Wilsons Promontory, this is the largest NP in the area you've been referencing. And when I wrote "tips", I meant clues, not "headlands".

The only place I can see is French Island, maybe one of the four corners. The high point on the SW corner separated from the main island by mud flats could be about right. This is north of Ossa, so it might be correct.

French Island National Park is correct. (Just as well; this game was ossifying). But it is not Leopard Head (the SW point), nor the other three "corners".

I have not been to the SW headland for decades. My recollection was that it was called Tortoise Head. Access is a five star hazard of mangroves - we were lucky to get out. This is in Victoria.

Tortoise is correct. After I erroneously wrote Leopard, it occurred to me that the topography bears no resemblance to such a beast. Should've checked the map.

To complete the second half of the answer. The most eminent location of the photograph is called The Pinnacles, all of 66 metres. That's why my clues made reference to the obvious paradox here. Good views though because the surrounding land mass is generally flat and the bay is (from up there at least) totally flat.

Correct. What struck me on that trip was the profusion of wildflowers in that clearing and nearby. Little Bogong has never been grazed and is somewhat off the beaten track. It was thickish scrub from West Peak and steep open slopes with deep bush litter down to Mountain Creek.

It threw me for a while.
Love the photo name - Magdala :)
It helped to have visited the West Peak and looked down the ridge.

My filenames are designed to confuse, and are based on my navigation skills. Another WAG, that looks like the Grampians. If it's not the Grampians it's somewhere else, maybe VV_IGP0426. They don't make names like that any more.

Yes to the Grampians - there was significant fire damage through this area.
