But it might be somewhere else to Buffalo. Somewhere that's only a little above 400 metres ASL.

Sorry, my reply to Lophophaps was meant to suggest that Buffalo is correct but the source was not. It is at a lesser altitude than the Alpine NP. Just checked the map now and it was c.450m. Also, eggs, my very basic camera does a small amount of (poor quality) zoom, and is not capable of seeing the kind of distance you mention. This would have been about half of that.

The post with the pic said "taken from a National Park next to farmland, with the top of the range in another National Park in the distance." The bumps looked like Buffalo, which with Jagungal are the the two most prominent mountains viewed from the AAWT. I have looked around Buffalo and cannot find a NP next to farmland. Just checking - was the pic taken from a NP?

Yes, it was taken from a NP, on a track beside a fenced paddock. Keep looking around. In all directions.

(As an aside: aren't all parks next to farms? They're the left-over bits that were usually too challenging to cultivate.)

Having been totally off, should I try the Warby-Ovens NP - or is that too far away too?

Warby-Ovens is not too distant. It's actually a little closer to Buffalo NP than where the shot was taken.

Chiltern-Mt Pilot NP is the one. Photograph taken on (un-signposted) CFA Track (off McFeeters Road) near Native Dog Peak.

Glad you got back, but if the distraction is in part due to Falls-Hotham, then I fully understand why.

This looks like an area below and roughly south of The Fortress in the Grampians NP.

Oops, my mistake. I have a folder with all my posted pics ... well, most of them. The one I posted in error earlier today is indeed just below The Fortress. The new pic above is not. Jonnosan, thanks for pointing this error out. I respond to reason, facts, blunt force trauma, chocolate and red wine, but not all at once.

Jolly good. That narrows down the possibilities. Can you say whether there was a copy of last Saturday's Sydney Morning Herald or perhaps a Gideons Bible there?

I did not see the SMH or a bible. There may have been a Koran; I did not look for one. There was also no toll road, quarry, or shop selling computers. In fact, the list of what is not there is quite extensive. This place is 40-60 minutes from a well-known walk that is not in Queensland, ACT, Victoria, Tassie, SA, WA or NT. It's in Australia. It's west of the NSW coast.

That reminds me of a real printed direction where somebody blundered, did not know east from west. I cannot recall the excat words or distance but it was in the form "The Sydney CBD is 8 kilometres east of Bondi." Pitt Street must have moved.

It's not the 100 men cave.

Please let me know if you want more of my helpful clues.

I always provide helpful clues. Of course my definition of "helpful" may not be the same as that in most dictionaries. As advised above, I respond to reason, facts, blunt force trauma, chocolate and red wine. I also respond to money, as I need all the cash I can muster - I'm paid what I'm worth.

Is it west of ALL parts of the NSW coast? That would be a useful clue.

Ribuck, actually no. I just realised that some parts of the coast are in bays, and if one goes west then one goes over land to reach the Pacific Ocean. So my clue is not especially useful. Sorry about that. Time for some real clues, methinks. North of the Batemans Bay latitude, south of the Newcastle latitude, east of the Goulburn longitude. This eliminates the Wilcannia Karst system, which will be helpful.

That narrows it down to about 50,000 sq/km :?

Oh all right, another clue. Between the Newcastle and Crookwell latitudes, and east of the Bathurst longitude. As I'm in a good mood I can say that the Newcastle reference above is the one in NSW, not the UK, although the UK one works quite well. The major walk it's near runs roughly N-S, and is close to public transport. This walk has a Jimmy Bancks connection.
