Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

Funny, I was just trolling my Mt Field photos, but all of mine suggest his image has too much vegetation for the altitude.
But I'd need a map to find Mt Lord so good luck to you.

Well done eggs, Mt. Lord it is, a nice, if overlooked day walk in the Mt. Field National Park..
Beyond that (outside the park boundary) is Lanes Peak.
Nice detective work, you really should move to Tassie, you know the state pretty well!
We'll give you honorary status as a Taswegian based on your extensive knowledge
You're up...

stubowling
it was your last clue that triggered me.
I had passed over Mt Field in my thinking, but I did remember that Mt Lord was a small peak right at the far corner of the park.
Once I had established that, a close inspection in the left background shows up the 3 peaks at the top of the King William Range with Mt Gell rising behind, but it was a tough one.

Anyway - time to let anyone else put up a new photo.
Feel free - particularly if you have not been a frequent player.

Good idea - I'm sitting on the fence for now.

No - In 1983 I was on another trip to the Weld. We went up the Snowy Range - traverse all of the range - mainly on a day trip - out and back, then across a saddle (lots of interesting limestone or dolomite caves and sinkholes in the saddle) - and onto the Jubilee Range - then traversed it (didn't take long - the Alpine Area was exactly one pandani!) - and then down to the Weld Arch (interesting horizontal scrub....) - and out via a TWS cut track to near Frodshams Pass. I have been scanning some of the old slides and will put some online soon.

Well, for us Taswegians who complain if we have to drive more than 15 minutes to get to work, the West Coast is a LOOOOOOOOONG way away for most of us. ;-)
Geeez Tozzies are getting soft since I left.
Forgetting how to drive, too . . .

Looks to me like you could be near the summit of Cathedral. That's what the rocks in the foreground suggest.
Going to cross reference my photos, but thought I'd get in with my guess.

I've still been trying to work out exactly where on Cathedral you were when you took your image. I'm having trouble picking out the peaks for the cloud.
There's a fair bit of zoom used.

Cathedral is correct. slightly south of summit.
Yes near where the camp shot was taken in my previous post.
Better pass on to someone who is thinking. Over to you Tasadam

I think norts was looking through Ducaine Gap and the mountain in the light is Mt Cuvier with Gould's Sugerloaf behind.

Well done tasadam

Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

You know, since my first post (of my last few posts here), I've spent the evening working that out because I've been confused.
I knew for sure you were up there, and I have been scouring my photos trying to work out where you were looking. I didn't have too many images looking south, but I could tell from the shadows on the mtns in your image it was morning and therefore you were looking south.
I finally found an image with a lumpy bit that matches a lump from your photo - here is an image (cropped from a wide angle shot) indicating what I believe is the same bump as the roundish bump on the left side of your image -
lump1.JPG

So I returned here to confirm along the ridge to the south of Cathedral, looking roughly south.
But you have answered for me.
Who's addicted?????????

OK, on to the next image...

Anyone want a hint?
Here's a hint...
Oh bother, eggs is online, this won't take long

Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

Mon 22 Jun, 2009 9:21 pm

You might want to go with the hint.
I am totally snookered - no idea.

Great shot from Cathedral though. Norts was further south from your spot and the peak you found was lined up more with Cuvier than with Byron.
This shows Byron on left & Cuvier on right - and it has a distinctive look that matches with norts.

Sorry eggs. Your abilities with the southwest so far have been so amazing, that what I was alluding to.
I can share that the image was taken in the corner of the state somewhere south of Rosebery and west of Derwent Bridge.

I'll leave it at that for now, not many online tonight.

Can't believe that I'm still up trying to work this one out.

How about the Cracroft Hills from Propsting?

Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

Tue 23 Jun, 2009 2:03 am

No excuse MJD
But I reckon you are spot on (or close to it - either Propsting or Mt McCall)
Nick S put up a photo in this comp from the opposite direction - from the DiAngular Range which is in the background.
Check at the 3rd picture at http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2307&p=20727#p20727
Look for the distinctive peak in the sequence of 3 in the background.

[I have not been trying to solve this, just mulling over photos and descriptions of Federation to figure out the direct ascent ]

AAARRRRGGHHH!!!!!
You are obsessed!
I really thought I'd stump people with that one for a little longer than that!
Nice to see I'm not the only one that is hooked!
I really thought I was going to have to post this image -

Because of its obscurity I will take Propsting (had to check the map to see where that was!)
I am actually on a high point about 150 metres to the northwest of Mt McCall, just south of the road.

Your go MJD.

I really shouldn't jump in but I can't resist.
Taken from around the summit of The Thumbs looking across to Clear Hill, one of my favourite day walks!

Very good... I was a bit worried that you might get this one.
Your turn

It is hard to resist isn't it. I've got over 100 posts just in this game.

Tue 23 Jun, 2009 10:10 am

Sorry to others trying to have a go; I'll resist after this one, I promise.
This one should be fairly easy, tho I'll want the correct summit I'm standing on.
This is also one of my favorite day walks, the views speak for themselves...

No idea, but I'm impressed with the views you guys get from your daywalks. :)

Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

It looks to me like you're heading west towards Strathgordon (soon to be renamed Strathghosttown I hear) and you've zipped up on one of the peaky bits out there, looking west. So many interesting peaky bits out there, none I really know well. Sentinals, Sawback range, another one on the southern side the name escapes me at the moment. Would love to spend more time in that area.
Of course I could be wrong with my approximate location, just what it looks like to me.
Those aren't guesses by the way, coz I've got no idea and no time now to go map trolling. I should give the game a rest for a while...

I'll put a shout out for Mt King William.... Two :)

Re: Game - "Where am I ?"

I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this forum although struggled mightily to identify most of the photos! Being from Launceston I've only ever really done day walks in the north of the state.......from following this forum and enjoying some of the amazing photos I've convinced myself that I need to get a bit more serious about heading to the south-west!
