Correct eggs. Ascending Mt John via the forest track overlooking Lake Tekapo and village. I had hoped for a nice coffee on reaching the summit observatory cafe. But their espresso machine had broken down when I finally arrived...groan.

Sure does. Reminds a little of the Wollangambe Canyon, maybe I could sneak the packraft into my luggage :).

For something completely different, an old scanned photo from Europe:

Ha love old scanned photos from the dusty garage.........

Is it Major Oak? As I'm only a young'un I've only seen the newer 'more robust' propping so I can't directly confirm this.......

Yes MM, the Major Oak tree in Sherwood Forest, taken in 1993. I'm sure Robin Hood and his merry men would have enjoyed it without all the supports.

No John that bridge is a suspension bridge whereas this is a truss bridge (apologies - civil engineer here). Its northeast of there.

I've got nothing so far. It does remind me of that general region around Queenstown, maybe somewhere on the Shotover or Arrow Rivers.

Sorry should probably have noted that its several hundreds of km from Queenstown (probably my geeky engineering talk put people off :? ). Wasn't on my way to any mountain climb or bushwalk - just for a relaxing night away with the wife.

Had morning tea at the rifigio and then lunch at the moraine you can see in the valley.
Then onto the RHS ridge before dropping to a major town that afternoon [which boasts a rotating cable car to some notable heights].

Ahh - the ping pong partner is back. :)
That will do John.

We had crossed Col de la Seigne into Val Veny and heading for Rifugio Elisabetta which is just behind the rock face on the left - part of Pyramides Calcaires.
Lunch was at Combal near Lac du Miage on Glacier du Miage - before heading over Col Checrouit to Dolonne/Courmayeur

Thank you eggs. Lol, we'll see I guess :). I was confident of Val Veny but glad I didn't add to it as I would have had the wrong rifugio, although was heading for Courmayeur.

Work with me wayno :). I can narrow it down to Otago. I would accept the name of one or more of the peaks at the back. Bonus points for any other correct info.

Pretty tough. It helps to have been to some of these places.
I can see a reasonably flat alpine plain with a lot of open areas and a track on the ridge directly below.
Reasonably forested slopes implies more westish locale.
There is some flat bits on the Matiri Range, but cannot place this view.
