Lautoka is correct eggs. We called in there for a day on a cruise earlier this year. Yes I think it might be permanently stuck. It looked quite derelict and unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon. I suspect it has run aground and maybe too expensive to salvage.

Thanks eggs, I think the alternate name may be taken from the town of Hatta nearby?
I don't have any photos with me. Anyone is free to go next otherwise I'll put something up later tonight.

A lot of wildlife in this region. A trail runner encountered a black bear on the trail a couple of kms behind me just before we passed through.

The name of the NP will do for the answer. Any other location info gets a bonus point. It is in western USA and well known world wide.

I'll take a guess and say Yellowstone NP. Haven't been to the US so unfortunately can't bid for the bonus point...

Yellowstone is correct MM. We are on the Beaver Ponds loop trail, an ~8.5 km day hike across the foothills of Sepulcher Mountain north of Mammoth Hot Springs. Apart from the scenery we encountered bison and elk on the trail, as well as a Pileated woodpecker jack hammering its way into a tree, something astonishing to watch. It's also bear country, so we had to continually make noise along the way, counter-intuitive to what I'm used to.

Yeah the fauna in those parts sounds fairly different to what we encounter here in Aus.

Moving back to NZ, what am I looking at?

This is a bit of a trick question - the photo is not taken of a mountain (although I will accept a mountain or mountain range answer)

Doubtful? Not the Sound - I'm just doubtful that I know it :-)

So, just in case there is any doubt as to whether it is doubtful that it's not Doubtful Sound, I'll try Milford Sound instead :).

Thanks Graham, looking forward to our first ever trip to NZ in February. Milford Sound is on my must visit list, probably won't be a lot of walking this trip though.

Back to USA. Clue - The ocean is a few metres behind me:

The look of the rocks and the sea clue I will guess Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

Defintely looks like Hawaii, but it looks a little too green for the leeward shore, so I'll guess it's Mauna Loa

Neither of those. But remind me at some stage to tell you the story of my adventure driving the saddle road between the two of them .
You are both very warm but try a different island.

This is a volcano but, unlike the still active Mauna Loa, though similar to Mauna Kea, this one on a neighbouring island is currently considered dormant.

Not Kauai, getting colder. Hawaii/Mauna Loa/Kea was much closer and just a short jump away from here.

From the clues, you are on Maui. But I don't know where exactly so I'll hazard a guess and say you're on the south coast looking towards Magnetic Peak in the clouds.

Yes that's definitely good enough Tyreless. I'm standing on the lava fields cultural site/walk near La Perouse Bay, looking up at the Haleakala volcano massif. Magnetic Peak is a cinder cone up there somewhere in the cloud, which I think I possibly climbed as it's a feature near the summit parking lot.
