Nice photo. Perhaps the hamlet of Lost, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, population 24. That looks like an old sign - they kept getting stolen. They replaced it in 2004 with a sign welded to a post concreted into the ground. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/3720848.stm)

You're absolutely correct, Tyreless. And that photo is certainly pre-2004.

Thanks ribuck - the name of the file was a clue to the photo's vintage, as well as the fashions.

Next, somewhere in Europe...

Honestly, some people are slack. I've managed to get there without maps, compass or signs. Frequently.

Not in the Orkneys.

A clue: If you got lost going to Lost you could end up at this spot - it's less than 50kms from Lost.

Phew. For a moment there I was lost, was blind but now l see, up to a point.

Somewhere along The Great Glen Way walk - 125kms. Had a brief job stacking pipes in Aberdeen but this is foreign country.

Rivers there are the Avon and Devon. But this looks like a Loch.

Yes, this is a Loch. I’m pretty sure it’s owned by the royal family (certainly a couple of houses on the loch were used by the royal family for holidays in earlier times).

Well Balmoral's the famous residence. I'll have to look it up.

Mmm ... On the River Dee, in the Cairngorms! That could be the Royal Boat Shed. But a river's not a loch?

You're getting close. It's on the Balmoral estate, but not on the River Dee.

No shortage of lochs in the area it seems. Not Loch Brandy.
Somewhere amongst this lot I guess.

There you go. Lock "Mick" (Muick), 8 km's south of Braemar - home of the eponymous hot water service?

That's it, vagrom. I stayed for a week in the nearby royal holiday house - my wife and I slept in Prince Albert's bedroom (seriously) - and we did the walk around Loch Muick most days.

Correct Wobbly. Stayed at a small place called Gronning on the fjord below. Fantastic walking around there. Langoya means Long island.
Vagrom you are also correct but not nearly as accurate. You have also committed the sin of calling the Vesteralen islands the Lofoten islands. I was definitely in the Vesteralens.

They use the name in a general sense but the Lofoten sub-region is the western chain ending with the village of Å. ( Spelling is critical if you're posting a letter to Å ).
