Definately Sth Island but could be just about anywhere there. Will take a (wild) stab at the Upper Rees maybe?

Its mainly river. I am thinking Arthur's Pass, but not sure of which track.

Not Arthur's. Think it shouldn't take much more so will hold off giving more hints for the moment...

Yep that’s the one. I think it was just a small lookout track near the top of the pass when driving through as I remember walking this with a baby in my arms.

I think I'd tuned out to the view when I went through there but it did look vaguely familiar.

NZ again...

Answer:

Borobudur in Central Java, the world's largest Buddhist temple. A 5 km circular walk for pilgrims from bottom to top.

I'm no geologist but I reckon you have the right rock

As for swimming, it was a warmish day as i recall but i didn't swim there... went for a dip downstream back at the night's camp though.

Guessing it's killer cold.
Sounds like you're on a recognised Track. Routeburn?

Someone I walked with in Tassie always talked of
Kiwi Graywake. Must have volcanic associations.

Not the Routeburn - nowhere near as popular.

This is in the same NP as the (northern half of the) Routeburn, but quite a way away from there.

You're quite likely in the Mt Aspiring NP and possibly on the Rees-Dart Track - quite challenging over 4-5 days.

Further north than Rees-Dart, and this spot is less frequented than the R-D.

I think Victoria Falls is a pretty safe bet for that one, eggs.

(Won't be back until tomorrow night; don't mind if someone else keeps the game going - if I'm correct of course!)
