lots of looks but only one guess. the two mountains visible are both well known Abels. The pic is taken from near a couple more.

Looking at Petrarch from Olympus? From the southern part of Olympus, that is.

Humming and haaing about that, but I don't recall seeing any fagus on the side of Othrys. But I'm good at getting these wrong, so it probably is.

Is the cute little marker still there in the cairn? Nice walk that, especially in fagus time.

Here's one that's a little different, with a nice story attached which (fortunately) most of you haven't heard.

You're in the right vicinity, but what I'm on - or in - has a very different name.

Ah. A helicopter perhaps? Over the northern end of Lk Burbury? I couldn't work out how you'd see that through the heavily forested slopes of Eldon Peak...

Yep. That's the King River down there. So the game is over to you.

I was requested to write up the story for the emag but am up to my armpits in Abel and Poimena stuff for Bill, so I might just add the text from the fb post I put up after it all happened.
Note: this is late January, at the time when the fires were near their worst, the day before the Lyell Hway was closed between Derwent Bridge and Ouse.

This is getting to be a habit - and not a good one.

To set the scene: You check the maps and forecasts carefully, trying to find a place to go that's on your hit list but not in the way of any fire. Target located, off you go.
Drive, unload, pack, paddle, repack, walk, camp, climb, camp.
So there you are, around 18:30, sitting on the summit boulder of one of our more glorious mountains, soaking up the views you missed the first time around due to the weather being fifteen kinds of ultrashit. It's peaceful, beautiful, utterly sublime, the light keeps getting better every minute and you just know it's going to be one of those nights...

And then, you see a brief flash of light reflecting off something down near the river. There it is again. It's moving. Is that a drone - no, it's too big, must be a chopper. But so low down, why there? Hell, that's red. Red and yellow. It's the rescue chopper. Now who the *&%$#! hell are they looking for?
Can't be me - I haven't asked for assistance, I'm perfectly safe; sure, there's a new set of fires but they're the other side of Murchison, look to be around Lake Pieman, no problem especially as I'm walking down in the morning anyway. But they're definitely running a search pattern down there, first around the river flats where I parked the boat, then up along the ascent route...
Then suddenly they stop faffing about and head straight towards the summit and you and keep circling until you realise they aren't going to politely bugger off, so you give in and go down for a chat. Soon as they're sure you're heading back to the camp, they land.
Seems they've been sent on a mission from TasPAWS, checking everything and everywhere between the new fires and the areas that were already evacuated. When they spotted the kayak (serves me right for going red, doesn't it) they knew they had a live one.
Well, what was the use arguing? They promise to land me safe and sound by the kayak, so the quickest (and untidiest) pack-up ever, and I'm installed in the front seat neat to the pilot and off we go.
Now, I love flying, and especially I love helicopters. But usually in aircraft you have small windows and with normal planes there's always horizontal movement to get you into the feeling. But this thing is glass to hip level, front and side, plus there are windows UNDER YOUR FEET!! And fly-boy is not content with doing this gently - we go straight up over the top and dive down the steepest, rockiest line he can find. What was eleven hours of sweat and struggle and pain from kayak to camp to summit to camp was, from being installed in there to watching them leave, at most eleven minutes of over-the-top-and-oozing-out-of-your-pores adrenaline, including a little bit of "let's hang over this side, no, how about that one" while he lined up the approach path near the river.

I'm still in two minds as to whether it was justified. Hanging out at Derwent Bridge and leeawuleena yesterday while the road was shut, it seemed fair enough even though I wasn't in any danger. But during the paddle earlier yesterday, trying to keep that *&%$#! kayak on a straight line along the river when it's too shallow for the rudder and the wind wants to spin me in circles . . .

And to think I came back to Tassie for a quiet life.

From Cradle summit, with Mt Emmett at the centre, Benson Peak on right (foreground) with Cradle Cirque behind that. Pelion West is the more identifiable fuzzy lump in the distance, with Ossa and co to its left, and Perrins, High Dome, Frenchmans and Eldon Bluff on its right.

So NNW you were "rescued" from a place some distance from any known fires and had to "shelter" much closer to a large out of control fire?

The technical term is "precautionary relocation", and I wasn't any closer to the fires overnight (camped by the river), I just got caught by the road closure on the drive back the next day.
In other words, you've summed it up quite well. I think the main reason for clearing the Eldon area was the forecast for the next day, which was rather nasty and turned out to be pretty accurate. But, given I was walking back down to the kayak the next day anyway . . . well, they saved my poor wonky knees a bit of hard work, so who am I to complain?

The small island is most probably Bruny or Maria, although I can't make the background hills fit either so I'm giving up for now.
