Bit of research  and it looks like it might be the Bird River.

I am wondering how long to leave this one.
Its a ripper as not many people would have been to this spot, despite it being very close to major traffic.
Not too recent - because the vast blanket of fagus at the back is still very green.
A bit envious - as I still have not managed to do this off track excursion.

You're on the money, Eggs. I was going to start clues now. I can highly recommend the spot! I loved the different perspective on things, and it helps me remember there will always be ways to enjoy this treasured area in spite of the hordes. (There's also night walking. :) ) There is still a good pad part of the way, which we found on our way back down. Unfortunately it vagues out and is hard to locate from the bottom. But I now know where to start looking.

Soooo...
There are Large Hordes of people nearby.
Part of a very well-known mountain is in view, famous for fagus.
The usual access to this spot is from below (via a popular but not overrun place to spend the night).
Pazzar's guess is in the right National Park.

I was just looking at some competition photos and thought the one of Mt Olympus looked a bit like this.
Is it Lake Helen?

A very good thought, Graham. But I'm at the other end of the park.

Thanks. What you and eggs say is right. (and I needed the clues)
When I was there I climbed easily up the gully and found the old cut track on the way down.

Next pic.

That was sensible. We took a more adventurous route up, based on my friend's partial memories. I enjoyed it, though. :)

I'm not able to view your next pic - just shows up as a ?. Are you able to upload the file directly?
