Bit of a guess that, although the vegetation on the ground did look a little bit familiar.
Where was I on Sunday? The name of the creek will do.

Last time someone left a clue like that it was for Cummings Head, so I'll guess you are at Smoko Creek walking up Cummings Head?

There''s a bit like that on the old track up Western Bluff, but I thought there were road access issues on that one.
Nothing else that quite fits comes to mind, unless it's one of the smaller creeks flowing into Smoko, and you're heading up Ironstone via Bastion.

Gatesy, you're right about it being on the way up Cummings Head, although I'm going to be pedantic and say the creek name is wrong...

I do imagine that I am probably the only person to attempt to camp on Basin Lake.
It loomed large in my imagination from an earlier walk past it but poorly on a late arrival 6 years later.

Correct Eggs. I remember you previously referring to camping there. It didn't look that appealing to me. I think the scrub may have grown. We were attempting to follow the Abels book instructions for climbing Mt Geikie. Let's just say it was a fiasco. 2 days later we did it via Mt Tyndall.
Basin lake viewed from the Hamilton moraine. The lake Margaret pipeline track visible. Mt Sedgwick on the skyline.

I am surprised you had difficulty.
My memory of that 1980 day walk was - car park at Lake Margaret, then 4WD roads to top of Hamilton Moraine - then along the ridgetop of the moraine to the Geikie ridgeline - over the Chin to the top.
All seemed quite straightforward with little to no scrub.
But it was 38 years ago.

The difficulty was the descent where I went straight west through thin scrub down the back of Geikie back to the 4WD road and misstepped hitting my knee into a rock. That could have been a fatal mistake at the time.

The problem started with the Abels instructions. Starts from the Anthony road. The map does not match the instructions. We followed the map. It's wrong and we lost time. After we figured that out we walked along the moraine (as per the instructions). The top of the moraine is thick, waist high, tea tree scrub. It was slow. We ran out of time. Returned via the 4WD hydro roads in the valley. Should have gone either the way you described or via Mt Tyndall.

Park near the Tyndall trackhead, walk the Hydro road south to Hamilton Moraine, up the Chin, back over Geikie and the Bastion to Tyndall, then down the track. Nice loop, one day over summer or a relaxed two dayer in autumn/winter.

We wanted to do a loop and had a vehicle at the Tyndall end. It wasn't the last time I found the Abels book's instructions to be dodgy.

Yeah, some details have changed since printing, but that one was always wrong from what I could see.

We had a bit of scrub, but nothing too nasty - about 4 years ago. That western descent off Geike was very attractive - but my walking buddy also misstepped and twisted her knee!

I keep wanting to say it's Lake Ooze (and Victoria Cross), but I think the vegetation is wrong.

You should keep saying - Lake Ooze.
So how can the vegetation be wrong??

I think most people camp on the grassy bit on the edge of the lake, but there are some good sites in the forest from where this was taken.

The hill heading up the other side looked spot on, but my memory was of more low shrubbery around the lake, and a single King Billy that isn't there. Didn't notice any good sites in the forest (and I couldn't think where you would have got that view from) - but then we were on a mission. Trip report to come. :)
