Re: GAME: Where Am I? Part 2

Postby tasadam » Tue 21 Jul, 2009 12:05 pm

Well, to start with, I had a nice glass of wine here with lunch.
Someone else posted a different photo from this location in the game some time ago.
There's a lot of Scoparia there.
It's up pretty high.
If you drew a vertical line on a map, I think I am east of, say, Mother Cummings Peak.
I've never been to Drys bluff.

I don't think anyone has taken tasadam up on his bonus question yet. You are at the lookout on Lemonthyme Road where the power lines go down to the power station. You are looking roughly south up the Forth Valley past that off looking hill near the confluence of the Hansons and Forth Rivers. It would have been a much better option if you had been there on a clear day and the majestic Mt Pelion West had been visible towering over the head of the valley.

Phil wrote:Would that be Quamby bluff then? (southern end)

I think you're on the money. I didn't think Quamby was high enough to be looking down so much on the plateau which is almost the same height. However, closer analysis reveals that a straight line from Mt Geryon to Quamby Bluff passes south of the Walls (the southern slopes of which are on the right edge of the pic), it passes south of Mt Ironstone and north of Wild Dog Tier. Therefore there's very little high ground to get in the way. The other thing which seemed odd was the large chunk of Central Plateau visible with not a single lake in sight. Once again, close inspection of the map reveals the view line strikes the plateau in the area of Wares Marshes which are indeed devoid of lakes. The Chudleigh Lakes (Furmage, Second Bar, etc) are hidden from view by the forested ridges in the centre of the photo.

If Phil is 'up the creek' then I am embarassed because the above waffle must be a load of twaddle!

I think it might be from at or near the Devils Gullet lookout on the Lake Mackenzie Rd. I've only seen it once but the skyline looks very familiar. I can't remember a view like that from Quamby Bluff but then I've forgotten what you see in that direction and photos are at home. So I'll be embarrassed in advance  .

OK well I'm back.
It is not from Quamby Bluff - another summit I am yet to conquer.
It is not from Devils Gullet (or anywhere on the road into Devils Gullet / Lake Mackenzie)
Now I have to go and read Tastrekker's "waffle" again to work out what his guess is  :D

Ok, Tastrekker, you got the bonus question right. Now I'm going to have to go back on a good day to see Pelion west!

I worked out you are agreeing with Quamby bluff which is not correct. As for your waffle, well all I can say for now is that it isn't quite "twaddle" whatever that is.

Short, sweet, to the point, and correct.
I knew that if I were to say "almost" to Quamby it would give it straight up.

about to start from car 100_7832 (Custom) (2).JPG
Here's a good family walk provided it's low tide! I'm standing in a car park so the name of the island is what I'm after.

Looks like Rocky cape kind of rocks, but I don't know the island or for that matter an island that is so close to the carpark.
Of course, if it's the island that is the destination maybe it's near the three sisters out the back of Ulverstone / Penguin area.
But if it was, wouldn't you be standing on a railway?
I know - you're standing on an island in a carpark, so the name of that island would be Tasmania

Hopefully this will be easy. I shouldn't say that, the last two times I did I got into trouble.

This isn't exactly bushwalking either, more like bushdriving. Well driving anyway! Name the public road I'm on and roughly where abouts.

Looks like the Scotts Peak road somewhere past Condominium Creek (Mt Anne track). Is the pink plant tee tree or something else.

Doesn't look like the SW to me...
I'll have a stab that you are on the Mathinna Plains road somewhere;
looking at Mount Saddleback perhaps?
Kinda has that North East feel about it...just a guess really.

It is not the SW. In fact the complete opposite.

Not Mathinna Plains Rd, but getting warmer. Not Mount Saddleback but you are very warm. Yes, NE feel is correct.

From Mount Victoria Rd then?

Once I saw the pic I definitely started looking to the north east and was going to also say Mount Albert Rd also!! (I'm probably going to have a wander up Mt Victoria soon)

The weather looks a lot like your recent photo from your trip to Mt Rogoona, and the rock does look like the top of Mt Rogoona. I can't figure out which direction you'd be facing though, from either my (very vague) memory of the views, nor from the map. But I'll make that My guess, anyhow: The summit of Mt Rogoona.

PS. Actually, another look at theLIST, and I think you're looking north-east from the top of Mt Rogoona, with Lake Bill at the left, Lake Louisa to it's right, and Lake Poe the little one in front of that. Lake Myrtle would be just out of view to the left, with the Northern end of it obscured by the rounded bald-rock hill.

PPS. If I'm right, the track between Myrtle and Meston should be just behind the little pool in the middle foreground. I can't see it, but it's a track that wouldn't be obvious from a distance (no gravel or duck boards).

Going by the shape of that lake down there and comparing it to my photos from Rogoona Summit, I think you are somewhere east of the summit but haven't pinpointed it yet.
