Out came the GPS when we couldn't find any cairns..
It's scary how easily that can happen!
Had a similar thing on Mt Thetis a few months ago. We got to the top in clag and wandered along the rim to find the descent point on the western side but couldn't seem to find it. Looked on the GPS to realise we had been scouting along the eastern rim. Somewhere along the way we got spun around and did not realize. My body compass could have sworn it was on the western side.

I've been spun around in a scrubby gully only to emerge 10 metres from where I went in ... doh ...

Sounds very similar to my experience. We had wandered to the SW edge to try to get a look at Swallows Nest Lakes, I could of sworn we were headed North when we walked right by the huge summit cairn

Haha doh indeed. MJD and I set off from hanging lake one day to do the southern traverse. 45 minutes later we wandered back into hanging lake.....

Spot on .... everyone stops when they get there, utterly stunning bit of forest.

That looks like the plateau with tarns on the way to Wild Dog Creek in Walls of Jerusalem . So are you at Solomons Jewels with Clumner Bluff in the background?

Yes beardless - this is Solomons Jewels - however the mountain at the back is King Davids Peak above Herods Gate

Of course. Right place but I was thinking it was looking in the opposite direction.
How about this one?

Fast and correct Graham. Trying to spot a platypus at dusk. We didn't see one.

This rather poor quality slide goes back to 1973. What mountain was I on?
