No other takers so I'll have a go since I've been down that way numerous times.
WAG, I don't know it but some of the view looks vaguely familiar - Ragged Basin? Maybe looking towards The Thumbs?

You're closer than anyone else has been, but still not right.
I got to this spot by following something with a name. Something you could walk or cycle or even drive. The stretch of water shares a name with something on the peakbaggers list.

ps: I visited Ragged Basin a little later that day.

So... Back to List Map. Maybe you initially followed Island Road then around to Wedge Inlet?

Wedge Inlet or Calder Reach - this is the headland between the two, where that sideroad ends in an informal boatramp and campsite. Looking at the Sentinel Range.
It's a neat little spot. Might do a bit of paddling from there later this summer.

Over to you, John.

Thanks NNW, added to my list of things to check out when I manage to get back down that way again.
It crossed my mind that I was looking at the Sentinels but dismissed it.

wrong way. previous answer contained a clue.

So "not quite right" could mean not Mt Wright, but maybe Dome Hill?

Your previous answer was "not quite right". Not dome hill but close enough. Looking at the Stepped Hills from Mt Wright.

Thanks, I was in two minds about whether the clue may have been cryptic and went with that assumption.

Wow, 93 looks and no guesses. Is everyone away or have I broken the game?

Not a lot of distinctive landmarks there. Could be almost anywhere on the central plateau (I assume it's in the central plateau?).

So I'll pick out a random lake to start with...

Lake Ball?

Lake Adelaide? (I haven't spent any time there... just walked past once or twice... and the water in this picture doesn't look big enough... but perhaps it could be some small corner of it...)

Yes Lake Adelaide, around the SE corner of it past the main body of water, where it dissects into smaller pockets.
I've only walked through there once myself, on the way to camp at the north end of L. Meston.
Over to you Nik.

Something a little different... where was I?

(I need a very precise answer here, as the general vicinity is probably obvious.)

Big Falls, Franklin River?

A little further upstream than that, Greg.

Well Sonofa, you have me scratching my head now. I paddled the Franklin for my first and last time in 1980 and the memory dims somewhat. The only place I remember a bit upstream is Double Falls which I remember well because for a few minuted there I thought my days were over. Anyway, Double Falls is probably not the right answer but your picture has brought back a heap of very exciting memories.

It's about another one or two day's paddle further upstream than Big Fall and Double Fall (sorry if my "a little further" was misleading).

Actually... if you were paddling upstream, it would probably take a few weeks. But paddling downstream from here to Big Fall is about a day and a half.

Time for a hint... at the risk of making it too obvious...

I'm standing on a feature that would be easily recognisable by many people who've never been there.

From the clue, I'm guessing you're on the Rock Island from Dombrovskis' famous Rock Island Bend photo?

Yep, that's it. Looking down at the Pig Trough rapid from the "Rock Island". One of my favourite spots I've visited was down there looking back at Rock Island Bend, but I don't expect I'll ever get there again.

All yours, NNW.
