Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Postby Tony » Wed 23 Feb, 2011 4:55 pm

....and now for something completely different!

With the Tasmanian "Where am I" (Tassie) game going for over a year and a half and shows no signs of slowing down I thought it would be nice to start a new Australian version.

This game will be a little different from the Tasmanian game. Firstly, you will be guessing “Where is it” ... where is the subject in the photo. Of course, to do that you will need to work out what it is you are looking at. For added interest, but not required for a win, the Poster can optional also ask you to guess “Where am I” ?

First to guess the right location gets to post the next picture of a location somewhere in an Australian National Park. Because pictures could come from any state, I will ask you please to post a picture with a good quality skyline or with heaps of visual clues to allow players to work out where the picture was taken. So we can get up and running, for the time being when you post a picture please give the first clue as the State the picture is from.

Players can ask questions and the picture owner can give clues. If you guess correctly but don't wish to post a picture, then just give your turn to someone else.

    Game Rules

Hopefully this first one will be easy enough.

Where-is-it ? Clue: its in New South Wales

Lovely Photo Tony.

Quoting from Ubiquitous Steve on another web site:
"You can feel its a special place.Miles from Main Range Massive sitting all by itself.Good place to look back south at bigger peaks and reflect on something or other.Funny little shape and all.Place to pitch tunnel tent just below cairn on eastern protected side. Can almost see it from Mt Mulhauser!!And this Mt can see you comming as you make feeble attempts to storm it."

Hi Nuts,

You are right, your turn. but then again I am not sure if Eggs should claim the prize. It is sometimes called the Lion of the North. Can you guess where I was standing when I took the photo.

Many thanks to WalkingTas, Tasadam and SOAB for their help in starting this game.

Hi Tony, I have vague memories of an endless fire trail walk into a great little hut in the valley somewhere to the west of there. I'll have to pass mine on to someone else ( ) I haven't done any mainland walks since the days of polaroid and have nothing on hand. Jagungal is somewhere I have on a list of places to revisit one day. It looks spectacular as a snowshoe trip. Nice image

(sorry, that didnt last long from me did it lol) Eggs?

Hi Nuts,

The hut to the west was most probably O'keefes, which burnt down inthe 2003 fires, it has since been rebuilt.

Over to Eggs as he really was first to pick the location.

OK
I thought is was Jagungal when I first saw it.
But I checked for a photo on the web - which is where I picked up the quote.
However, I was not prepared to post just yet - so I just left the quote.

Jagungal is famous as a true "peak" [rather than a rolling hilltop] in the main range sitting off by itself to the north.
There is a well known multi-day walk from the north end through to the Kosciuszko end - of which Jagungal is a key landmark.
Locating where you were would require map work - as I have not been there. But I suspect you are south of Jagungal.

Better make the next one reasonably easy..[he hopes]

Gee we are in trouble if that one is not considered a rolling hill. I guess you mainlanders would be hoping for a ice age pretty soon so you can get some glaciated landscapes :D

Well then - the waterfall should impress you then. [This is a 300m deep gorge]

However, it is hard to gauge the scale of Tony's photo.
As Tassie is so compact, it probably seems a bit strange to look across a gap of a few kms to the next peak.
But keep looking - you might be surprised at some mainland crags.

Curious - what were you searching on?

Yes - it is Barron Falls near Cairns, Nth Queensland.
And you aught to see this one in full flight! With spray filling the entire basin.

Mt Jagungal from the other side looks a lot more like a Peak.

My Photo was taken from The Kerries near Mawsons Hut.

well i started searching for south aus waterfalls as i know your from there but with no luck i had to expand my search horizons, pretty easy in the end. Interestingly enough it didnt make it on to a website named AUs 10 best waterfalls.

Now im in trouble though, i only have 2 suitable mainland photos and ive just given away how to work out one. So try this one, if this is to difficut i can add another image later to make it easier. happy guessing

I was wondering whether that first one might have been the Natural Bridge in the Springbrook National Park, Numinbah, Qld.

Looks like Tony is in the Blue Mountains somewhere... Don't know the name of the things he's looking at tho.

i think Nuts is close, but i would say the photo is taken from atop the castle and the flat top mountain is Byangee Mountain.
It's just around the corner..
