Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

I'd agree with crollsurf, but say they went up Ruined Castle on the way out but around it on the way back. Also looks like they climbed the Korrowall Knife Edge but didn't go much further across Mt Solitary. If I'm right then crollsurf's right, so it's his go next.

I would agree if the return distance is 13.62 km. I know that a return trip from the top of Golden Stairs to the top of Korrowall Knife Edge is approx. 14 km. Deviation to Ruined Castle would have little impact on that.

Well done for working it out, crollsurf. And kudos to tyreless and johnw for additional details.

Here's what I reckon were the clues:

  • The starting and ending altitude are higher than the rest of the walk. This is characteristic of sandstone country close to Sydney, especially the Blue Mountains
  • The walk starts by immediately going steeply downhill, i.e. descending the escarpment
  • If we cut out the bump from 3.5 to 5.0 km, what's left is symmetrical around the 7.5 km high point. This tells us that it's an "out-and-back" trip, the purpose of which was to reach a mountain
  • The bump from 3.5 to 5.0 km is also symmetrical, so we have an "out-and-back" side trip to a lesser peak, which was only undertaken on the outward leg
  • There are long stretches with a very gentle, steady slope of about 20m per km. That's very little, and might not be noticed on the ground. It's typical of constructions such as water channels and railway lines
The railway line, in this case, is the abandoned narrow-gauge railway that ran past the base of Ruined Castle. We see that they made a side-trip up ruined castle on the way out, but not on the way back. Furthermore, the symmetry of the side-trip shows that they descended Ruined Castle the same way they ascended it, whereas someone who knows the area well would usually keep going to rejoin the main track further along. As Tyreless worked out, they didn't go right across Mt Solitary, or even as far as Chinamans Gully which would have been obvious on the altitude plot. We know that they started at the Golden Staircase, becuause if they started at Furber Steps we would have seen the roughness of the landslide on the plot. And we know that the party comprised two men and a woman because ... no hang on, that doesn't show up on the plot.

Thanks crollsurf, yes I was thinking that and did a double take when I saw it :).

NSW again. Name as many major features in view as possible - There are a minimum of three. Bonus point for my location.

I did a 1000x zoom with digital image enhancement, and I reckon I can clearly make out crollsurf on top of korrowal knife edge taking a photo of you, johnw :-)

PS I reckon you are most likely on a (AFAIK) unnamed pagoda just off glenraphael drive about 1km before golden stairs car park.

Additional visible features include ruined castle, kings tableland, sublime point, kedumba creek

Some similarities but this is a long way from the Blueys

I'm a fair way north of there and looking NE but you are getting closer

I'd say you are at Wombat Hill Lookout, looking over Yarrunga Creek and Mt Mooltatoo. Not sure but if you look closely, that may be me standing on Mt Carrialoo.

I thought that was you crollsurf

Yes all correct and you get the bonus point, on Wombat Hill LO with the twin lumps of Wombat Hill below (interesting that only the southern one is named on the map), looking up the Yarrunga Creek Valley towards Fitzroy Falls, Mt Carrialoo and Mt Moolattoo on the right. I've climbed Carrialoo a couple of times, one day I'd like to try Moolattoo.

Thanks johnw, might even head down that way this weekend.
Not too far away in NSW. Can you name where I am heading to?

Little Forest Plateau to Mt Talaterang ?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

That is Pigeon House but the track doesn't take me there.
I am on Little Forest Plateau but "head"ing to a spot East of Talaterang

From where I was standing, you could be heading to Florence or Rusden Head. Your go cajun

Thanks Crollsurf,

Rusden, Florence and Mt Bushwalker are great "bang for your buck" walks.

This is also in NSW - taken with some zoom.

Name the NP I am in.

Thanks cajun. I once made a circuit by climbing up that series of waterfalls, followed the creek upstream to meet an old fire trail eventually joining the Illawarra Hwy. Walking back down the road was the scariest part of the whole thing. I'd rather reverse the route than do that again.

Where is this in NSW, bonus point for pinpointing my location:
