Western corner of Kangaroo Ridge?
[see previous page for other guesses... :)]

Mmmmmmhmmmmmm. See, there's a clue in the shape of the image. I had to cut out that part of the summit cairn that was in the original because leaving it would have made it too easy.

Apologies for inflicting another Loppy special on you all.

After lightening and straightening the image, I'm ... well, not much further enlightened. Yes, there are a couple of snowpoles there. And the bottom left corner has something that looks like wire helping to hold up a trig or other marker.

I'm guessing this is from the first AWT trip?

Not on the AWT, but very close to the AAWT. My AWT trip was in summer, quite hot most days.

If you reverse the photo [assuming it was scanned from a slide] - then it might be coming off the Twins looking towards Mt Selwyn

Pretty sure it is a scanned slide, but reversing the image is a step too far, even for Loppy. :x
Don't remember any sign of poles on the Twins.

It is indeed a scanned slide, from 1974. Our walk up the spur was and is not that frequented in summer and even less so in winter. It's late afternoon on the second day, and we made it to the hut on nightfall. The hut is at around the same altitude as where I was standing, about 1760 metres, cannot be seen, hidden by one of the bumps.

Is hut Cleve Cole?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 12:58 pm

Edmonsons Hut? McKay in the distance - so maybe on Baker Spur?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 2:07 pm

Not Cleve Cole or Baker Spur. Your locations are slowly getting closer, something like NNW's Kosciuszko pic. It's roughly SW of Baker Spur, just off the AAWT.

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 2:25 pm

That sort of leaves Heathy Spur [but surely that is well frequented?] - but the hut would still be Edmonsons?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 2:55 pm

It's way over on the far side of Falls Creek, a long day from Heathy Spur. The pic is unmanipulated, SLR, colour slide, scanned. I'm on a ridge heading southish as the sun sets, hut 40 or so minutes away, maybe 1.3 kilometres.

Timms? The marker just out of view being the trig?

edit: no, Going the wrong way. Near Jim?

edit again: Hang on, did you go up Diamantina?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 3:05 pm

But Youngs Hut is only at 1640m?
And the North West Spur of Feathertop - heading for Federation hut is a long way from the AAWT?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 3:39 pm

The AAWT visible from where I took the pic is past Jim. Go eastish from pole 267 for a while and look north to where my pic was taken. I did not go up Diamantina Spur that trip. The spur I went up to get there is generally SE. On a clear day in summer you can see a row of poles on the AAWT from where I'm standing. The hut is on the AAWT, 1.3 kilometres away.

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Pole 267 is at the junction of Youngs and the AAWT off Basalt Temple. Going eastish and looking north presents a pretty flat plain as far as you can see.
If you meant South - that would gel with Youngs Spur as I was suggesting - and Youngs Hut - which is not at 1760m and not on the AAWT.

If I toss some of your clues away - and think about huts on the AAWT around the 1740-1760m mark - I come up with Derrick Hut south of Mt Loch.
I have no idea which spur would be the SE climbing spur - but maybe Dibbins Divide could fit the bill?
If you are facing south - that would place you north of Derrick Hut - coming off the slopes of Mt Loch.

Further east. It's eastish of pole zero, the start of the Hotham-Bogong pole line. and before StBernard. If you can get the answer we will be in good agreement about where it is.

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 4:57 pm

Huh? St Bernard is West from Pole zero?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Wed 19 Jun, 2019 5:05 pm

When you say "before St Bernard", do you mean north or south?

The lump with the long ridge leading to the right looks a bit like Blowhard. I can even see a line that looks like the old track around the east side of it. But to get that angle - Freezeout or . . . what's the name of that other lump out that way - Smythe?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

OK - I have an online photo with your image in it now - summer but.
Soooo... maybe it was the Bon Accord Spur?
But this will be on the Razorback Track heading for Diamantina Hut.
Great Alpine Road is just visible cutting across the darkened slope on the LHS - Little Mt Baldy adjacent

All those easts were meant to be wests.
Also please explain "Go eastish from pole 267 for a while and look north to where my pic was taken"

Yes, that makes sense.

Mea culpa. East should have been west. I have no idea why I kept saying east; I know the area very well, barely need a map. Top of Bon Accord, good agreement. Sorry. Eggs has it.

Looking west nw to Telowie Gorge and Gulf St Vincent, ne of Pirie?

Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

Very precise. This was from the Heysen Trail in the southern Flinders Ranges

Edit - oops - this is Napperby Gorge - not Telowie. But still OK to go next.
There are 3 named gorges that run off the western slopes below the Bluff.
From south to North there are Napperby, Nelshaby & Telowie

Thanks eggs. Last did Telowie in '99 but never noted the line-up before.

Where's this hut in NSW?

Well it seemed like a good angle at the time and Wheelers is well visited.

Your go Zapruda.
