Process of elimination. I keep wanting to say somewhere in SE QLD, but so close to the ocean doesn't align with my own experience.

Yes John, that's the place. Interesting bit of history and a good steep climb to get the blood pumping.

Thanks Tyreless, I walked from the top of it down to about halfway then reversed back up and took the side trip to Mowbray Falls. Nice walk.

NSW, what am I standing on:

Reminds me of the slabs at the old Rocky Waterholes Ck lookout but the view just doesn't seem right.

Trust your memory Michael, yes it is Rocky Waterholes Creek lookout, back in Sep 2003. I picked the most obscure shot of it I had.

Bit of a guess.

Victoria creek valley with mount banks in the distance.

Taken from... Hmm somewhere to the east of Victoria Falls Rd. Maybe near Odin head.

Victoria Falls Road and Mt Banks is correct but Odin Head is the wrong Head. Track is not on any topo map but is well used.

Assuming you were looking at victora creek valley? Then perhaps the unamed head at the intersection of victoria brook and creek?

or you could be somewhere along this cliffline? Though not sure if its classed as a head.

Without going and physically checking I cant tell

Sorry, I should have said earlier that I am not looking over Victoria Ck that would put me too far east of where I was.
Clue: north side of Victoria Falls Rd.

Ikara head?

I've never been there though it's on the list. Didn't expect the gully to be as deep as the photo. Bit of an odd direction for mt banks as well but I guess you could be taking the shot from an angle.

Yes, it is Ikara Head. I stopped to have a gander at the view and decided to get this shot as it put Mt Banks in an interesting position. We were just on the south side of the Head when I took this shot.

The track out to Ikara Head is well worn and was easy to follow. Google Streetview is handy but not current. Streeview link to track start: https://goo.gl/maps/HRZi4f3mjr65W5nx9 . Note the cairn on the stump in the middle foreground. The track head is across the other side of the drainage ditch behind this cairn. There are cairns placed on either side of the track head so it was easy to spot. If you zoom in you can see the track head. We parked in one of the drainage ditches a little further along the road. The track is marked on Open Street Maps which is what I used to find the start of it.

Over to you.

Cheers,
Michael.

Thanks Michael. I'll have to make a trip, always wanted to walk out to Ikara and girraween cave.

I noted on open street map there is a marked route down the gully to the Grose then upstream and up to the causeway/railway line. I wonder if it's a footpad or someone just added in a offtrack adventure? Did you see any signs of a pad heading down?

Next one. Also in NSW. What am I looking at and where am I standing.

Looking at that track on OSM it is described as: "(faint and overgrown - marked with yellow paint)". May have been an old way to connect to the Engineers Track.

We didn't go all the way to the very end of the Head as it was blowing a gale and my companion got blown over by a serious gust. To be honest it was a bit scary so we stopped before reaching the very end and headed back. Unable to confirm the existence of a track off the end of Ikara Head. Now you have even more of an excuse to visit the area. :D

Re the OSM track(s) - if you zoom in close you will see the track off the end of Ikara track doesn't join up with the one below - unless you are a rock climber of course. But the lower track does indeed join up with remnants of the engineers track.

And since I am here anyway - the shot above looks a lot like sublime point viewed from the top of korrowal knife edge/mt solitary.

Not looking at sublime point. Although your half right.

Re ikara head. The other track shown on OSM that descends via the gully appears to go all the way down unbroken. I wonder if this way is doable on foot?

looking at the ruined castle and narrowneck then?

Yes the track down the gully is doable - probably faint though. I think I uploaded that to OSM a few years ago after exploring downstream from Girraween cave.

No. But your heading in the right direction! :)

Very interesting. I'm keen to do this as a loop heading back along the causeway to the station. Did you see any spots to camp down by the Grose/surveyors creek? (Should be upstream of the old mines right?)

cedar head?

I've brewed up with water from the grose near the surveyers creek junction. I don't recall any great spots to pitch a tent.

Shame about the lack of campsites. Hopefully il spot something atleast doable. Did you have any issues walking back along the rail line?

cheers. not sure how I managed to get that so close and so wrong so often.

I got nothing, anyone else can jump in.
I think there was a bit of blackberry at one point that was a bit annoying to circumvent without entering the rail corridor.

Thanks Michael, I suspect likely some flow of nastys from Koombanda Brook gorge (orginal site of the colliery) as well, also perhaps the old mine shaft and kiln ruins located between Thor and Asgard Heads as a creek runs through it. But the junction of Grose head and Surveyors creek should be ok (unless there is other old mines im not aware of)

A futher side note. Here is and old map aprox 1890 based on 1830 surveyors drawings. So the route that Jonosan added to OSM appears to be the exact route of the old engineers track heading up to the Darling Causeway. Very keen to explore this slice of history now! Sorry folks for the off topic!
