Fat Canyoner, I am pretty sure this picture is of the little canyon/gully at the bottom of the waterfall that the track runs beside as you start to ascend from Walls Ledge, it probably has a specific name but I don't know what that is, I would say it is maybe Centennial Glen Creek?

I think this is the same spot, I was last there 14 June last year.

Spot on Greg. It's the little canyon section in Centennial Glen.

Alarmingly, one of the proposed upgrade routes for the Great Western Highway would see a 4 lane road built across this creek.

Thanks Fat Canyoner. Thats a pretty dismal situation with the proposed highway re-routing at Blackheath, for once it would be a good thing if the NSW govt runs out of money and does nothing.
Next up a double barreled question: this is a picture of a strange looking piece of ironwork guarding what thing? in the bush at what place? ( warning- I only know the answer to the "where" part of the question, although I have heard differing interpretations of the "what"!).

Ribuck, you are getting warm, the iron grill is indeed guarding a hole in the ground, but not a cave at Bungonia and the geology is sandstone not limestone. Hint: It is less than twenty kms from the previous picture.

Yes, NSW does seem to have a good share of the locations over the last few weeks. I can't speak for other players but in my case the reason is simply that most of the bushwalking I have done recently has been close to home, that is, in NSW. Also, some of the recent locations have been fairly specific rather than general locations so could be hard to identify if you had not been to that particular spot. On the other hand there needs to be a bit of a challenge, it would useless to put up a picture of the Three Sisters. But, if I am fortunate enough to have another turn at this game I will try to put up something more recognisable to the broader bushwalking community.

Peregrinator, with one in three Australians living in NSW, and a great deal of walking to be had in the state, it is reasonable to expect that NSW will be the dominant location for photos (especially as many people, like myself, are rather restricted by family commitments so almost exclusively walk within a couple hours of home).

I won't answer this one, because I'd only post another another NSW photo, but it's pretty easy to find on Google. There's a good article on the likely origin and use of the pit. A little surprising when you see how bushy it looks in the photo.

GregG and FatCanyoner, your comments are very reasonable and mine was not. Greg, your “still in NSW” provoked my mock angst—STILL??? OF COURSE!!! I hope you interpreted my off-shore islands reference as the attempt at mild sarcastic humour it was.

FatCanyoner, I certainly do not want anyone to refrain from posting an answer when they know one. I try to answer, but usually fail, at identifying shots from my home state, as well as the very small parts of SA and NSW I have visited. (But I have some NSW photographs that I have chosen not to post because I know the game will probably then be stuck in that state for some time.)

In the back of my mind was the question of whether the forum needs state/territory based games, rather than just one for Tasmania and one for the remainder of the continent. That seems rather ridiculous, at least on the surface, but I don’t know that the demographics of our membership makes another system workable.

Yep, it is a man-made pit, not a cave. Here's a view looking down inside it, at a guess I would say it is five or six metres deep, it has been cut out very carefully with pick and shovel so it is fairly old.

And oddly enough, at the bottom of the pit there is a short, low tunnel a few metres long that exits at the foot of the nearby cliffline.

Some say that this is one of the several "convict pits" that are scattered along the route of the original western road over the Blue Mountains and no doubt the iron gangs would have toiled away only a few hundred metres away.
