Refining it a bit further, is it near the junction of Govetts Creek with the Grose?
And that that bank is where Shortridge Pass comes down from Du Faur Head?

That is a plausible answer in terms of the landforms but still not the right location - the Hawkesbury has many tributaries. In a radical departure from the mores of the Where-is-it (Aussie) game I am putting up another picture taken at the same location showing the view to my right.

Not the Colo Croll and not the Cox Keith. Paddle like mad and avoid those haystacks and stoppers ....

A tough ask. Somewhere near the junction with Glenbrook Gorge?

Most people got that this is a creek/river junction but which one, the various locations put forward emphasise the similarities of the mountain terrain bordering the Sydney Basin I guess. This is in fact the Glenbrook Creek/ Nepean River confluence as posted by John W only a few weeks ago under more normal river heights. Over to you John.

Greg, Definitely a stark contrast to my visit many years down the track after your photo was taken. Maybe recent conditions would be a closer match.
Another from NSW:

Screes like those are common on the Shoalhaven, so I'm thinking your photo is of a tributary of the Shoalhaven. So I'll start with the obvious one and guess Lower Bungonia Creek.

Yes, good first guess ribuck. I think I was probably at or near Bungonia Lookdown and that is Lower Bungonia Creek below, with the slot canyon off to the left.

Yes, Tyreless has it right. We were going to walk through Goochs Crater, but it's currently a lake. Three of our party swam the lake, while the other five made our way around to Goochs Cave then up that chute.

I've been down that chute a few times in the wet, when it becomes a water slide. Speaking of water...

It was a long time ago, and I have no photographs, but I'm reminded of the Merrica River crossing at the northern end of the Nadgee Wilderness.

A very long way north from the Nadgee area peregrinator. It looks remote but is pretty much the antithesis of that.

Much closer Tyreless, but not in the Blue Mountains. Head ESE.
This "pass" is not in a national park, but a couple of well known NPs are close by within walking distance.
