Is it Mt Taroo or Mt Tarro?

Postby Allchin09 » Sat 06 Jun, 2015 1:30 pm

Hello,

I was just looking at Kanangra online through SIXmaps when I can across something I hadn't noticed before. About a kilometer North East of Mount Colboyd is a small knoll marked as Mount Taroo.

My understanding is that this feature was named after a past member of the Sydney Bush Walkers named Walter Tarr, usually called Taro or Tarro. Why it would named Mount Taroo as opposed to Mount Taro or Mount Tarro I did not understand. I then had a look through my older maps, and sure enough on both the first edition topographic map and the Dunphy Kowmung sketch map show the feature as Mount Tarro!

I have seen the location of features change between map editions before, but this is the first time I've noticed a name change on a topographic map. Of further concern is that information accessed through this website, http://www.geodata.us/australia_names_m ... nt%20Taroo, shows that it is listed as Mount Taroo by Geoscience Australia.

My guess is that this change isn't intentional, and that someone has just made a mistake along the way. I guess it's probably best to rise the issue with the Geographic Names Boards to see what they say.

Does anyone else know anything about it?

Yes it's definitely a mistake. I heard that not long after Myles named it Taro made a point of going out there so he could tell everyone he'd been there.

Yes, it really does seem odd. A search of the Geographic Names Board website here - http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/place_naming/ ... TRjtvqsyIt - shows that it was apparently changed in 1969 from Mount Tarro to Mount Taroo, meaning that the maps are technically correct!

I've emailed the boards, and hopefully I'll get an explanation as to why the name was changed.

Intriguing - 1969, that's the year Taro died.
