An emergency app has helped rescuers locate a couple lost in bushland south of Canberra.

The 57-year-old man and 58-year-old woman were hiking in the Talleganda State Forest near Captains Flat on Saturday when they became lost.

They called triple-0 and Jindabyne Police launched a search operation.

During the search, the couple used the Emergency + application on their phone to allow emergency services to pinpoint their exact location.

They were found safe and well in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sergeant Brad Hughes said the app could prove to be a life saver for anyone who finds themselves in an emergency situation in a remote area.

"Knowing exactly where to send our resources is usually the biggest challenge we face in these sorts of situations," he said.

"This application makes it far easier for us to find you in a time-crucial emergency, greatly improving your chances of survival.

"However, it is still no substitute for adequately preparing and planning any trip to avoid becoming involved in an emergency in the first place."
