Northern NSW: Van, Tent + Baby in August

Postby Champion_Munch » Sat 08 Apr, 2017 11:59 am

Hi all,

My partner, daughter and parents have a week off in late August/early September and are planning to go camping in northern NSW. My folks will be staying in a van, we will take our tent. All of us have done plenty of camping in SEQ and wanted to head further afield, but not too far (previously we visited New England NP which was great, but a bit of a drive now as our little one will only be 11 months old).

Currently we are eyeing off the Grafton area, perhaps Washpool/Gibraltar Range or Yuraygir NPs. The mountains are more appealing, but I also imagine they would be much colder than the coast at that time of year (not a problem for the oldies, of course - just mindful of the little one). We are all pretty keen bushwalkers, but a selection of shorter tracks (or longer ones without a lot of ups and downs) would cater to all of our abilities.

Could anyone make any suggestions for suitable campsites? Looks to be a few options at Yuraygir, and Mulligans or Bellbird campsites in the mountains, but it would be good to hear from people who have been there before. Needs to be accessible by a van, and ideally short driving distances (by 2WD) for accessing walking tracks.

Yuraygir is pretty nice, shelly beach is an easy walk in and out but fully primitive, and may or may not have water nearby, There is a bit of vertical to the walk, but the view is worth it, and the track is not that long from the campsite to Mara creek. Broom's head is a well run caravan park, the parks run campgrounds are pretty decent as well. There are enough things to do and see, and you can choose your level of remoteness pretty easy.

Large camp area, creek nearby, wide forestry trails for walking & push bikes. ... campground

Secluded rainforest camp, small circuit walk to picnic area next to creek. Murray scrub walk & Sherwood lookout nearby.
Hopefully reopened by your travel date. ... bells_bay/

Past this one several times, will have to drop one of these days. Water access, Fishing, Kayaking, even a 9 hole golf coarse at the dam end,
the road actually drops down & across the river bed in the front of the dam then heads towards Peacock Creek camp area & the Richmond Range NP. ... campground

Grassy area surrounded by bush, alongside a creek. Stepping stone to the Cambridge Plateau scenic drive. ... ional-park ... icnic-area

Tiny cleared grassy picnic area amongst the rainforest, at altitude but out of the wind. ... campground ... ional-park

Gateway to a myriad of tracks & waterfalls falls in the area. ... icnic-area

No camping at Terania creek itself, so The Channon is the nearest camp area. Hopefully that to is open too by Aug.

Enjoy your break in a few months time....
Mountains view are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !
