Hey guys

Looking for any advice for a good place for overnight winter trekking in southern NSW, around 3-4 days (2-3 nights) in July preferably somewhere around the Australian Alps.

Currently doing a Cert IV Outdoor Rec and need personal experience days, plus winter trekking is something I haven't had too much experience with so far.

Any advice appreciated

Snowshoeing?

You could consider the Budawangs for likely snow-free walking. In the Snowies, subject to weather and snow conditions you could consider various options north of the highway but if you don't have experience in snow I am loathe to suggest the main range etc.

You could hike in Namadgi NP in July and not encounter all that much snow but still enjoy the freezing cold days and nights.

The Australian alps will always have snow on them in July - Well they better, or I'm going to be disappointed!

Hiking in alpine environments (especially in winter) needs a completely different mentality and gear list.

Where are you coming from?

I have experience in snow but not in Australia and not in deep snow.

I'm coming from near Griffith in the Riverina.

What does that experience entail? Backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, camping in the snow, above the tree line, can you navigate in a white out?

Do you have a 4 Season Tent and a warm enough sleeping bag?

I'm obviously not looking to navigate in a white-out. Like I said, I'm looking for 3 day overnight treks to gain experience. Just hikes not showshoeing and not skiing. Snow is fine but I'm not looking for waste-deep stuff. I was asking if any parts of the Alpine Track or close-by are good for winter hikes around 3 days or so.

I have all the right trekking and camping gear. If I didn't I wouldn't be asking. Unless it gets below -30C I don't think I'll be freezing.

Namadgi sounds pretty good but are the roads okay in July?

No one wants to navigate a whiteout mate but if you are in the alps its a possibility at any time...

You could walk from Mt Tennent in the ACT to Mt Bimberi along the Australian Alps walking track (AAWT). Mostly devoid of snow until up high near Mt Bimberi. It has a well defined track. The roads are fine

In July, in the alps, you will either be snowshoeing or skiing. I would count them out at that time of year.

For a three dayer you could do a circuit out of Orroral along the aawt to Oldfield's, Pockets and back via Leura Gap. All on fire trail or good track (except if you're doing a side trip to Bimberi... You'd need to read up on that if you are) . Bimberi being a side trip means you could assess on the day subject to conditions, progress etc
