6 foot track water availability in August

Postby rustyjus » Tue 01 Aug, 2017 12:05 pm

Hi,
Im planning on walking the 6 foot track mid august and was wondering about water availability in the tanks and creeks.
It has been a particularly dry winter thus far and was hoping someone could provide any recent information on the water situation.
Thankyou in advanced!

Cox's river, Little River will always have water and if not sure about the tank at Black Range camp then you may have to drive in and have a look. If you are starting from Jenolan or leaving a shuttle car there you can drive into the camp area to check on the way or do a water drop.

Plenty of rain up there today and tonight. Water won't be an issue.

I've just finished the walk starting in Jenolan this weekend. There was water in the tank at Black Range Campsite and Cox's River Campsite. Interesting a new water tank, undercover area and toilets have been installed at Alum Creek Reserve. The river was also running.

Thanks for the info all, hope this update is of use to someone else.

Great news re drinking water at both campsites. Looking to do this walk in 2 weeks also from Jenolan back to Kat. Peterm17 did you find any track notes that describe the walk from Jen to Kat direction?

Many thanks

The "traditional" way to walk it is from Katoomba to Jenolan so the track notes are all written as such, at least the ones I've seen. I used the grid references from the Topo maps (Jenolan, Hampton and Katoomba) and entered them into my GPS. The trail has signs which are observed in both directions. The walk is a mix of well worn foot tracks, fire trails and 4WD tracks. Of course take maps and notes but I doubt you'll refer to them as the track is easy to follow. Enjoy walking in the bush in a fortnight.

Matt McClelland and Wildwalks have done a 6 Foot Track guide book with separate track notes starting from both the Katoomba and Jenolan ends :-)

Hi, Looking at doing the Six Foot track in a few days and wondering what the water availability is at the moment? My main concern is the tank water availability at Black Range. I assume water (tank and or creek) at Coxs River campsite is fine.

Hi,

I'm planning on doing the track too within the next week or so, can you give an update on the water if you already did the track?

Completed the six foot track on Thursday 5 August 2017. There was water in all tanks along the track, however the recently installed tank at Alum Creek was almost empty (plastic tank so you can tell). There is also a toilet and shelter with tables at Alum creek as well. There is only a very small area for tents, however the location is excellent.
