Strange Noises at Night// Camping

Postby lilyrachel04 » Sun 17 Sep, 2017 8:00 pm

Hi, I have a question and I wonder if anyone would know the answer as I am genuinely very intrigued. A few months ago I was reading on a forum, I was reading about the Nattai Area, Starlights Trail and Emmet's Flat. I read that the people were planning on camping at Emmet's flat for several days but ended their trip early as all night there was a 'screaming laughing' noise. Today I went down Starlights trail with a friend and we met some people who were coming out of Emmet's Flat from camping overnight, they told us that they heard an 'animal' all night long making a 'screaming laughing' sound. Anyone know where this sound may have come from!?!?

Possums can make a screaming noise. That would be my guess as to what is making the noise.

EDIT: Search youtube for: possum noise. Plenty of videos of possums making some weird noises.

Cheers,
Michael.

P.S. I was wandering around Nattai NP today and what a beautiful day for walking it was.

Most likely a bird. owl maybe. Some nocturnal birds can make very freaky noises.

Its usually possums throaty rasp.. that freaks people out first.. but once they get used to the possum noise.. then the birds are the next on the what the hell is that... list

Probably a glider. You can listen to their calls on Soundcloud. They do sound a bit like the sound of an axe wielding serial killer on the prowl.

It's worse in Tassie. Right near the top of the all time worst 'bush freak-out noise' list is Devils mating.

Lucky for me, have only heard recordings of devils, sounding like they want to eat each other alive. But the worst "freak-out" for me was when starting to doze off in the tent at night, I heard a large tree very close by crack then crash to the ground. Despite the time I put into choosing what I hoped would be a safe site, I lay there for the next half hour considering whether to get out in the dark and move everything. But to where? Trees in every direction. Eventually drifted off, then woke up in the morning very grateful to still be among the living.

As for "strange" noises, my first experience of being woken on a dark night by a sambar deer close by was memorable. I had no idea of the source of this aggressive-sounding honking. Got up and flashed the torch but saw nothing and was only able to identify the vocalisation once I'd got home and checked. Then, hearing it again on a later trip in a similar location (below Mt Bogong), even though I could now identify the source I still shivered as I thought about the bulk of these animals and whether it might want to punish me for occupying its territory by crushing my tent and me. Yes, I know they are herbivores, but those antlers look scary. Antlers have gotta be un-Australian! That abusive term "un-Australian" gets thrown around a lot, but I've got no hesitation about applying it to sambars. One very friendly member of this forum excepted!

We were visited by two large NSW policemen one night, investigating a report of some women being murdered in the vicinity.
They were obviously not convinced when my wife and I laughed and tried to explain it was a vixen in the gully calling for her mate.
Oh well. Since my wife was standing beside me, it seemed unlikely to be us, so they went away.

Cheers
Roger

Quolls have a strange mating call, and they can be heard in spring.
