Great North Walk - Water at Hunter lookout

Postby DavidB » Tue 13 Feb, 2018 9:03 am

Planning to walk the GNW from south to north next month and just doing some food/water drop planning. Anyone been to Hunter Lookout in the Watagans recently and can they confirm if the water tank there is still functioning? I read that its been vandalised (like the one at the forestry HQ campsite).

I camped at the Basin last week, the tank was functional but almost empty.

Hi Jack

We leave Sydney on March 13 and expect to reach the Basin around March 21 and then Forestry HQ/Hunter Lookout around March 24.

So next week would be great if you can spare the time.

Thanks a lot
David

Isn't there a creek at The Basin?

Cheers

Hi Roger,

Yes there is a creek and a wonderful collection of very loud frogs who live around it. I would drink if I had to after filtering, boiling or treating in some other way but it doesn't look or smell nice, does not really flow and is full of rotting vegetation. An option but a last resort for me.

Ah well, just go a bit upstream and you will find better water.
But consider - if the frogs like it there, the water can't be too bad?

The pool at the Butchers Ck gate (going to Yerranderrie in Nov) looked like a very second-hand latte. Not pretty. But 20 m upstream I had clear water flowing over sand.

Cheers

Not to worry Jack. I spoke to a Soil Con bloke who knows the track and he told me the tank at Hunter lookout is working and there is plenty of water in it. But thanks for the offer. When I finish the GNW I'll put a post up on water supplies for the whole walk. For anyone planning to do the GNW over the next month or 2.
