Info on Mt Nibelung (Budawangs)

Postby Huntsman247 » Tue 14 Aug, 2018 9:54 am

I'm planning to do a trip to Mt Nibelung in a few weeks. Not much info on it. And I'm looking to save a bit of time figuring out a way up. Would I be correct in assuming that there will not be any water on Mt Nibelung?
Also I have 'bushwalking in the Budawangs' book but it doesn't mention Mt Nibelung more than a navigational reference. Does the 'pigeon house and beyond' book touch on it? Can't seem to get a copy of it and wondering if worth searching for one.
Or does anyone have any useful information about summiting Mt Nibelung?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't been up there, but the Ron Doughton Bushwalking in the Budawangs book does have a solid half page on the Mt Nibelung climb. It's at the end of walk 2 (pp. 24-25 in my copy, 3rd edition 2004).

... and p30 in the 2nd edition - I wonder what was cut?

Mention made of it in Pigeon House and Beyond, but no comments on a summit route as far as I can tell

I stand corrected. I've looked at that page a couple times but think the grey cells were a bit too tired to make the connection.

I went up there in the late 80s as a side trip on a Sutherland Club walk. No useful memories of the route, but I don't recall it being that difficult. Maybe Castle grade? The only thing I do remember is my hat blowing off and falling into a deep slot that was too narrow to get down into to retrieve it.

Haha well I'll let you know if I find a hat. That's good to know. I plan to visit crooked falls in the morning and Summit Nibelung after lunch. Glad it's not too difficult as coming up out of Angel creek is steep enough. Do you remember if there was water up there? Otherwise I'd have to fill up by the bridge.

Sorry, but no memory at all of what was up there.

Be aware that it's more overgrown than when those books were written. If it has rained in the past day or two you will find water in puddles on the rock, but normally nothing.

Here's a photo of Mt Nibelung, taken from Shrouded Gods Mtn by a guy called Dennis who has a lot of great Budawangs photos on Flickr. The ascent is up the "obvious" ramp.

Yeah figured its a path least taken and yes I realise vegetation has grown considerably more. Sounds like I'll have to hoof up some water.

Good to know. Thx. Man the difference in vegetation back then and know is insane.
