Guy Fawkes River walk - Chaelundi to Newton Boyd

Postby LynnD » Thu 20 Sep, 2018 4:20 pm

Hi all,

I am after some information from anyone that has walked the Guy Fawkes River, starting at the Chaelundi Campground and descending via Lucifers Thumb (or thereabouts) then walking down to the Old Glen Innes/Grafton Road. Any info greatly appreciated incl.
1.The distance in kms (will have topo maps soon but not arrived yet) - people seem to have walked it in anything from 3 -10 days which gives me not much idea of distance! We have two 13 year olds walking so don't want to have them hiking 30kms a day!
2.What is the walking like?
3.How many times do you need to cross the river?
4.Is the way down signed and is the route along the river signed at all - I suspect you don't really need it?
5. Anything else to be aware of?
6. Recommendations for camping spots along the way?

We are going to do this walk in a few weeks so spring time still. Water levels are low at the moment as you can imagine.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Cheers
Lynn

You can 'previsit' with google earth... that will give you an idea of distances - save the kml file so you can come back to it.

Some general descriptions here https://www.snowys.com.au/blog/guy-fawk ... onal-park/

Part of this might be the 'bicentennial national trail' .. and have their markers. The descriptions I have read from them suggest it is a very rugged walk, best left to the horse riders. But I have not figured your route compared to theirs.

Note the warning on snakes! That has been a common thing with the report I have read in the area. Snakes seem to be very common in this area.

An online version of the topo map can be found here:
http://maps.ozultimate.com/?lat=-30.055 ... 7942837063

Looks like your whole route is on the Bicentennial National Trail.

One trip report I found is from 2012: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=11011
Another trip report in the area from 2014: https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/g ... gs-7269374

I have not done this route, but am very interested in doing it!

The Bicentenial National Trail Guidebook 7 Killarney to Ebor gives Jordan's Yards, Little Plains, Sawpit Hut & Newton Boyd recreation reserve as campsites but I'm sure there would be plenty suitable sites anywhere along the banks of the serpentine Guy Fawkes...let your legs choose for you.
Should be a great trip, LynnD...totally green with envy.

Jordans Yards to Little Plains camp....21.2km
Little Plains to Newton Boyd Rec ground...21.3km (Sawpit Hut camp is 5.6km from Little Plains heading towards Newton Boyd).
So rounded up, a 43km walk in the park..a National Park that is. Enjoy.
