Clear fresh water swimming + hiking destinations

Sun 09 Dec, 2018 7:00 pm

So as it starts to heat up I'm looking for some destinations that require a bit of a hike in and have a nice camping area on the banks of a clear flowing fresh water river. Some shady trees to relax under and enjoy the afternoon with a bit of a swimming hole to have a paddle in. We live in the Wollongong area so within 5 hours of home would be great. We have a 4x4 so any road access is good with us.

Thanks in advance,

Luke.

Blue waterholes in KNP comes to mind. It is absolutely stunning with no shortage of walks in the area.

It can get very busy in summer and the March flies can be annoying.

Worth a visit.

Shoalhaven, easy walking down Long Point - always a summer bludge trip favourite. Take a lilo and paddle around

Above suggestions are good (for blue waterholes can walk downstream from the waterfall in the picture to a good camp at the junction of the goodradigbee and that creek). Kowmung from one of the many routes from kanangra,. Nattai from starlights (although the water maybe not so pristine). Corang cascades from wog wog a personal favourite (and not too far from the 'gong). Acacia flat in the Grose valley from a number of possible starting points. Colo... Heaps of options, could go on and on.

Nattai can be a bit iffy when there is a low flow. OK for swimming in. If you are down at Emmetts Flat the water in Troys Ck is normally reliable. Best to still treat Troys Ck water but it hasn't looked bad enough to me to require filtering.

Near to the 'Gong is Heathcote NP. Woronora River is good and clean. I treated the water out of the river but a friend who was camped on the river with me drank the river water without treating and suffered no ill effects. I have always considered Heathcote Ck to not be safe.

Cheers,
Michael.

It's hard to beat the Wollangambe River for swimming in summer.

You people are brilliant. Thanks so much for all the idea's. Those places all look magic!

I'll get some pictures up of the places I manage to get to over the next couple of months.

Thanks again,

Luke.
