Water at Bimberi Peak and Jagungal (Derschkos)

Postby Explorer_Sam » Tue 25 Dec, 2018 11:26 pm

Hi all,

Doing a couple of walks in the coming week. Wondering if anyone knows what the water situation is likely to be at the following locations:

Bimberi Peak - Oldfields Hut, Murray Gap and anywhere in between there and the summit.

Jagungal Wilderness - at Derschkos Hut and anywhere between there and Round Mountain.

Thanks,
Sam.

There is a water tank at Oldfields. It should be full after all the rain. Heading toward Bimberi from there you cross the Goodradigbee, it has plenty of water. Water can be a little scarce at Murray’s gap. There is a small stream about 500m down Murray’s gap on the fire trail on the ACT side. It should have some water but may flow slowly.

No need to worrry about the availability of water in Jagungal. It’s everywhere. Treat any water near Derschkos.

Very rarely is there a shortage of water in knp and there has been reasonable rain there over the past few weeks. For Bimberi - as Zapruda says. Read this thread http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=28837

The Fire Trail between Derschkos and Round Mt can be a little dry: that's the way the FT was routed after all. Head off the FT and there will be water in every gully.

Murrays Gap - that was many years ago, but it sticks in my mind there might have been a small tarn in the gap, from drainage off the hill sides, and the gully to the W (back towards KNP) may also have had water in it. But that was a long time ago.

Cheers
Roger

A little update:

Car broke down initially in Tumbarumba, and we limped home without ever lacing up the boots. Oh well, next time!
