If you're after a good, practical course practicing map and compass navigation, Ashley Burke is your man. He ran navigation training for the Sydney Uni Bushwalkers for many years and in recent years set up a small guiding business. He runs pretty regular training weekends in the Blue Mountains. Details on his website: https://mountainsphere.com.au/navigation-training

He also has a really detailed online resource he developed that takes you through all the basics of navigation: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~aburke/N ... ntents.htm

Another option is Caro Ryan who runs the Lotsa Fresh Air website (https://lotsafreshair.com/). She's also an extremely active member of the SES Bush Search and Rescue squad. She now runs a map and compass navigation course in partnership with the Blue Mountains Climbing School: https://lotsafreshair.com/product/intro ... avigation/

There is also a good guide to map reading and some of the basics at Geoscience Australia

Ive heard coast and mountain walkers are running a bush navigation course in September. Free to members or likely those interested in joining the club.

I did a 2 day course at the at Australia School of Mountaineering based out of Katoomba (I think they're out the back of Paddy Pallin)

The mornings were spent doing theory and the afternoons were out in the bush doing practical orienteering, triangulation , map reading , GPS etc

The instructor at the time was very knowledgeable and was able to cater to all levels of ability.
