Gordon Smith Memorial on Grassy Hill

Postby Kenno » Wed 30 Dec, 2020 7:41 am

In 1962 some bushwalkers erected a cairn in memory of Gordon Smith (died Borneo, 1945) somewhere up "Grassy Hill" on the way to Gospers Mountains.

Does anyone know where it is ?

I believe it is in a dilapidated condition but am interested as February 2021 will be the 90th anniversary of Gordon Smith and Max Gentles' epic trip from Capertee to Kurrajong which included walking up "Grassy Hill" to Gospers Mountain.

I'm guessing that Andy Macqueen would know where it is, a photo of the memorial cairn from 2016 is shown on page 219 of his Wayfairing in Wollemi book. Page 218 gives a rough description of its location. Do you have the book?

Also, my guess for the location of Grassy Hill would be GR 545 296. Try for the saddle :)

Thanks Alex. Yes, I have the book. We could probably assume that it would be in a conspicuous place. Will try to get there this year.

We have been over Grassy Hill a few times in the last 15 or so years.
I cannot recollect any signs of a cairn on our route.
That is not to say there may not have been some piles of rock somewhere in that country - but so what?

Cheers
