Another good intro to overnighting is the MacFarlane Saddle route to Tali Karng - there's a thread in here about all the different routes and the current track conditions. It's a short easy walk to the new Riggalls Hut Camp, which makes a great base for a number of day walks - Spion Kopje, Tali Karng, Millers Hut/Gable End/The Sentinels, the Wellington Range.
Then, when you're more confident (and the water level is low enough), the river route is a good workout though longer and harder work.

Cool... Victoria doesn't seem to get enough credit as a good place to hike. All the places suggested in this thread look absolutely amazing!
