Grampians peak trail

Postby surly 17 » Mon 30 May, 2016 3:10 pm

I'm interested in walking the first part of the Grampians peak trail but want to walk the section from halls gap to borough huts in one day which is just over 20 km. Parks Victoria set it up as 2 days is there any reason why you can't do it in one day I'm used to walking all day and distance is not a problem thanks.

I think your plan is a good one. I guess it has been set up that way to generate as much revenue as possible.

It's done easily in one day. I actually ran it late last year

For the majority of people 12-15 km is the furthest they are happy to walk in a day. They are just trying to target the general public.

My hiking group did the first two days in one day.

It took us 8.5 hours to walk 25.8km we stopped for breaks at lookouts etc and had lunch at the campground that is at the end of day one - we finished around 4pm - it is definitely doable

I've done Bomjinna to The MM high point and return in one day, and also Jimmys Ck to Wannon and back in a day, so you should be fine.

Have many people done the Peaks Trail yet (or what exists of it so far)?

I gather that the first day is pretty much the Grand Canyon day walk. That's a lovely walk although it tends to be pretty crowded and is very close to roads and carparks. How about the next 2 days? Worth doing?

Mount Rosea is definitely worth doing, whether or not you do it as part of the Peaks Trail or just as a stand alone day walk is your choice.

Thanks Snowzone. Think I'll leave it for a day walk. Or maybe once the whole Peaks Trail is built I'll do the lot.

I did the first section a few weeks ago over 2 days, Mount Rosea was good I also liked Sundial peak. I'm glad I didn't stop at bugiga camp very uninspiring and not very far along the walk. The first part of the walk out from borough huts on the second day is nice but the final few Km along the back of the reservoir was Pretty average.

Cheers surly. I thought that big around the reservoir would be pretty ordinary - typical Grampians filler, like the third day of the Major Mitchell Plateau walk.

These third days are only to get you back to your start point making it a circuit walk. When the Peaks trail is in it's entirety it will be a through hike from start to finish and these return tracks will simply be used for those doing smaller circuit sections.

Yep, that's true. I just find it a bit silly that they promote the Major Mitchell walk only as a 3 day walk, when really it's a much better walk as a 2 day walk. Of course not everyone has the option of a car shuffle (or wants to hitch), and they could promote the 3 day option for those people.

Really enjoyed it. I've written up a blog post for you all to have a look at. There's definitely positives and negatives, which I look at in my blog. Please give it a read.
