I/we downhill ski every year, but I/we really should give some backcountry a crack, walking or skiing.

Might work up to real snow camping one day, although the idea of a hut looks very attractive.
Have done day walks in snow shoes late in the season.
But in SA, winter is for walking in the Flinders - so taking 4 young boys for a night on the summit of Mt Brown this coming weekend, followed by the Dutchman's Stern foothills.

Going downhill skiing in NZ after 6-7 yrs break when I finally decided skiing can not be considered to be a sport that induces health. It's actually a risk to long term health due to the types of injuries it can lead to. It can only be considered to be a recreation. Now, going to get back again with our family friends to primarily introduce this recreation sport to our kids. Will likely to be mainly on the green runs and seeking opportunities on the trip for a bit of a walk. Otherwise, going to find opportunities to take a few walks with work piling on from a new project.

Snow shoe trekking and snow camping at Mt Stirling, Mt FT, The Razorback, The Fainters, Edmondson's hut and possibly Mt Bogong via the Eskdale spur or Pretty valley hut and Mt. Mackay.
I might even drive up to Charlotte's pass and have an October crack at the main range circuit in late spring snow.
I am also taking my day walking friend to Mt. Torbreck if they get a good dump of snow , mid week.
I have all the gear now including non technical crampons and an ice axe.
Bring on the snow !!!!

My own winter hut favourites are the most accessible ones

Fitzgerald Hut at Falls is pretty great as an easy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing trip (https://wordsandwilds.wordpress.com/201 ... e-retreat/)
And Four Mile Hut outside of Selwyn is much the same in NSW (https://wordsandwilds.wordpress.com/201 ... -mile-hut/)

But this winter I'll be over in NZ shredding Treble Cone and Cardrona!

Excellent, I assume that means a lesson or two (best way). Perservere you won't regret it.

I will get a XC ski lesson, they have a package with ski hire, a lesson etc.. My Hiking friend did this just recently and said after a one hour lesson he was skiing around the Rocky valley dam.

XC lessons are definitely worthwhile, if you already have downhill skiing experience then you can pick up NNN-BC pretty quickly and a short lesson will make a world of difference. Whereas I've been trying out telemarking and multiple lessons have left about as graceful as the adolescent ugly duckling!

Moondog is camping at Pretty Valley campsite and if you ski out there he is always happy to provide coffee and talk about anything skiing/outdoors to anyone who will listen! I believe there is an X-country trail not far from the campsite.

Plan on going up the Crinoline, though kids footy means unfortunately it won't be until late August as one of my sons team looks like going deep into finals.

My XC classic ski lesson was good but falling over happened a lot and stopping on the downhill bits was tricky and scary.It didn't really float my 47 Y.o. boat. I will try again next season but I am a happy free spirit in snow shoes.I made 11 trips in snow shoes in 2016 and went to many places incl. The Summits of Mt. Bogong and Carruthers Peak in snow.
