Lake Tali Karng - McFarlanes Saddle to Nyimba camp site

Postby JohnStrider » Tue 01 Nov, 2016 9:14 am

Hey guys,

Myself and a few others went on a camping trip over the long weekend to Lake Tali Karng. It was the first time I had ever been there and I absolutely loved it. The lake itself was absolutely stunning is really does live up to its name as the 'hidden lake'.

We spread the trip over three days and I have blogged about the first section on my website: http://www.thehikingsociety.com.au/2016/10/31/lake-tali-karng-mcfarlanes-saddle-to-nyimba-campsite/. I will release another blog about the trail we took from the campsite to the lake.

In terms of this section of the trail, what I really like about it was the wide open spaces of the Wellington Plains. As someone who is so used to hiking through forests and bushland, it was really nice to follow a trail that cut through an open area. In saying that, it does leave you somewhat exposed to the conditions. It was quite hot on Saturday and despite wearing sunscreen, we all got burnt in various places.

For those of you who haven't been there, the trail is about 8.5kms and follows a fairly well-formed path to the campsite. There are very few hills for you to tackle, however, there are a few streams to jump over. You can drink out of these streams if you want to but if you are a little bit unsure, always filter the water.

Below are some pics of our first day...

It was a great weekend for it. I wish I had organised my time better, instead I get this rainy, windy weekend coming.

Also, none of your Pics will load for me.

Did you cop any of the snow that we did on Monday?

Apart from the wind at night, the weather during the day was pretty good I thought.

Did you find the pit loo and water tank at the camp site? That is very handy. I go out there every Feb. It is one of my favourite hikes. I always go down to the Lake as a day trip without the heavy pack . The route down Riggall's spur track is much better than the very steep Gillio's track. Did you walk around the lake and have lunch at the Waterfalls? That Is heavenly . You got good weather. I have been out on Wellington plains twice in excremental conditions . It is not much fun in such conditions.
Swimming in the Lake when it is summer is super too.
:-)
Next time you can hike out via Miller's hut and Mt . Wellington and return to MacFarlane's saddle via Moroka gap .
Also worth exploring next time if you have the time , energy and good weather are the Sentinels. You can see the Lake from the top. Echo point on the Riggall's spur track is also meant to have a lake view but we couldn't find it when we went in Feb. 2016.

It's a track, not a trail.

Cheers for your input. How do you differentiate the two?

'Trail' is a Yank term, hence its popularity in many states. In Victoria and Tassie we use the Australian word for a path through the bush intended for human foot traffic, which is 'track'.
In other words, if you're in Vic or Toz, it's a track. Elsewhere you can use whichever term you like, with the exception of the AAWT which is a track from beginning to end.

The T in AAWT still stands for track, even if you're walking on sealed road.

True. Two routes (for want of a better term) in the same place means that this place has two names, and which one is used depends on which route is used. You drive on the Hotham Road and walk east from The Twins on the AAWT, which is the Hotham Road for a while. Then the AAWT follows the Mt Loch Road aka Machinery Spur.

I don't like "trail". Too many US words are ill-advised for Australia. Think cookies, bathroom and Trump. I note with interest that much of the US lacks toilets.

And unfortunately they hike instead of bushwalk....
