Postby rimail » Sun 13 Nov, 2016 1:15 am

Hello everybody.

I'am French so, please, excuse my english.

I've been to a lots places for hiking and it's something I really like to do.
I've been to Australia twice but I've never done a hike.

I will be in Victoria in march next year and I would like to hike in the Grampians for 3 days.
I have a car so I would to do a loop. I'am an experienced and faily sporty hikker and I like to do 8 hours a day.
What can you recommande for me ?

Major Mitchell Plateau. There are threads in here detailing the options.

The Grampians Peaks Trail is currently 3 days and is a new walk being developed which will eventually go end to end of the Grampians. It loops from Halls Gap - http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/assets ... ochure.pdf

Hello Rimail, there is a loop walk that you might enjoy which is currently closed after fire damage, but which might have reopened when you plan to be walking next March. This is in the Mt Difficult Range, linking Troopers Creek, Mt Gar, Briggs Bluff and Long Point campsites.

Otherwise, north-north-west’s suggestion is good, though some people comment unfavourably on the final leg, from Jimmy Creek back on Ingleton Track to the starting point. Of course, this can be avoided by going back the way you came instead. I know some people only want a circuit not an out-and-back, but I can’t see the point in that if (a) a significant distance of the total is not so attractive, and (b) the other part is so nice you really ought to do it twice anyway! Going in the opposite direction means the views are different.

The same logic (yes, logical for me but others may think otherwise) applies to the walk suggested by neilmny. Day 3 is a very boring route and will not be part of the ultimate GPT route. But perhaps a more notable issue for you with this one is that you could do days 1 and 2 in one day without much trouble if you like an eight-hour day. Plus you’ll have the distraction of many day-tourists on the first section, and there’s a fee to camp. Sorry, I don’t know what that cost is, because I am just not interested in that sort of camping so can’t be bothered looking it up.

Finally, a lot of the best Grampians walks are really one-day affairs, so that's what I'd really recommend, apart from the first one I mentioned if that becomes a possibilty next year.

Although it is in the general area, that's not the loop I was referring to. A lot of it involves walking on roads.

There was a recent announcement that the route I did mention that is in this area is about to be or has already reopened, but some of it has been altered. Trouble is, I cannot find where I read that information. Maybe someone else on the forum knows. I'll post again if I can find it.

Yes, thanks, neilmny. The trailwalking.com report has a map of the route. But this had been closed for quite a while for repairs after floods. What I came across not that long aho was a statement about it being reopened with modifications. E.g. no longer going to/from Troopers Creek. I thought perhaps I read that on the ParksVic website, but apparently not. I'll keep searching -- and bookmark it this time!

Parks web site is not really letting much out of the bag. Maybe contact the Brambuk Centre and speak to someone who should know what is the go.
